And people are willing to do this? As a daily commute? I'm not the OP but we've been considering moving to Boston, but after reading this, I'm not sure we have the right mentality to live there. Half an hour tops is all the commute anyone's getting out of me.

Have you tried to commute in SF, LA or Washington DC?
It's a piece of cake here...
You should see the 1000s that commute from NH to Boston everyday...

...half hour commute?? That's living in Brookline and taking the T. Beyond that, you need more time.

I've done 40-60 minute commutes. It's not something you actively choose. It's more like a choice between making a living wage or flipping burgers.
With gas prices skyrocketing though, flipping burgers down the street might actually give you more pocket money!

Yeah, I've commuted in DC...never more than half an hour's drive, though. I admit taking public transportation can triple or more the commute time - one reason I despise relying on public transportation!

Many thanks for these helpful replies. Looking again at our plans we could go to about $500000 - and from my searches, three places which stand out are Milton, Wrentham and Franklin. Would any / all of these, do you think, fit our dream of good schools / upscale community / safe / reasonable commute to Boston? Thanks again!

Milton is definitely upscale, close to Boston, has a fabulous private school with beautiful grounds (Milton Academy). Wrentham is more upscale than Franklin in my opinion - smaller, prettier, more affluent I think, but a little sleepy. Franklin is more bustling but I wouldn't call it upscale. I'm sorry I can't give more detailed information as I haven't lived in these towns, have only been there on personal business. I'm far more familiar with Wrentham and Franklin than Milton.
In the current U.S. housing market, you should be able to pick up something very nice in the $500G price range. I think you will find Milton the most expensive.

For most the problem is housing price, starting at $600K with median around $950K.
