As the title says. Looking for a minimum wage job. What can be done about it? I can work any shifts. I don't mind being paid minimum wage. But for some reason everywhere I apply, I never hear from them ever. Despite the fact that they advertise they are hiring. But I never get an interview. Also, why is it that they are so against people using the commuter rail? They seem to be turned off by that.

Even if I'm willing to waste my time commuting for a minimum wage job 60 miles away I'm still deemed as being unreliable.

How do they know you use commuter rail?

Not enough information. One of the reasons I believe I was not interviewed a lot prior to my retirement was because I was laid off (among others who were 55/older) and when I applied for jobs it was either leave out years of experience or give them my real resume. No one believed I would take that great a cut in pay so they wouldn't call me. (I asked my employment counselor to check on these companies and see why - I just wanted an answer). Some I practically begged, trying to explain that X$$$ as compared to O$$$ didn't compute. Some, because my experience was so broad, the interviewer felt threatened.

You'll have to figure out what it is that is stopping them. I went to the unemployment office, signed up for a counselor and did the best I could. But, this may be something you can't do on your own, you may want to look into having some sort of employment counselor.

There is an easy way to set yourself apart from the stack of applications they receive.

Call them.

Even if you don't have a contact name (although you should at least ask for one when you fill out the application) just call and ask for the manager. Tell them you filled out an application and you're following up. 99.9% of the time, they will love your assertiveness and they will talk to you and they will schedule an interview.

Right now, you have a sales job. You need to sell yourself to the prospective employer. The best way to do that is to get them on the phone. As long as you are confident, polite and professional, success is almost guaranteed.

Good luck.

Probably because the commuter rail sucks, and they don't want you to be late several times a month because of it.

Timberline told me to use the commuter rail. It's the only way for me to get to Boston.

All the times I've tried it, I got a rude and nasty person on the other end telling me they weren't hiring.

Lots of people take commuter rail, and I don't understand why the subject of your transportation comes up in interviews.

Parried, what with the non-stop repetitive posts on this topic? Haven't you beaten this horse to death enough to try something new? I know how you'll answer...

Time for you to find a new sandbox, IMHO.

If corporate tell them to put up a sign they do it ,doesn't mean it's true. They do it to look good.
