I see that the overwhelming majority of people in Amherst work for the universities. Are Holyoke and Springfield the big employment centers in Western Massachusetts? Any others? If I live in Amherst, what kind of commute to these cities can I expect?

The area from Springfield to Hartford is the major employment center for folks in that area. MassMutual is a big employer in Springfield, and you'll find insurance companies and other employers along Rte 91 down to Hartford. From Amherst all the way to Hartford could be about an hour, and Springfield is about 30 min depending on route and traffic.

There aren't that many jobs in WMass and I think your best bet would be to work at one of the 5 colleges (that includes UMass).
