Jewish family relocating to Boston... (Newton, Brookline: renting, condo, houses)

Hi everyone,

We are a couple in our mid-thirties with a young son, looking to return to Boston after many years of living in California. We'd like to find a friendly, up-and-coming Jewish community in the Boston suburbs with lots of other young families. Not sure where we'll be working yet, but thought I'd put this out there. We're priced out of Brookline/Newton/Wellesley/Sudbury right now, but with this market, who knows?!

Belmont has a really nice family-oriented synagogue. Not sure it's really cheaper than Newton. I live in Arlington, right next to Belmont. It would help to know your budget? Also, do you want a single family home or would a condo also be acceptable?

Definitely look at the town of Sharon. I was going to suggest that too when I saw your post. I lived there myself for 3 years and we loved it there, it's a wonderful town, not only that, it's only about 25 miles from Boston, if that. It borders with Stoughton and Canton and I think it's Walpole on the other side. It's convenient too, Cobbs Corner is right there with many shops. You can take the commuter rail in to Boston from either Stoughton or Canton or the bus if you don't want to drive in. I lived on Bay Rd. 4 1/2 miles down from Cobbs Corner; which goes right in to the town of Easton. As you're cruising through the town driving around the area, look for it, it's one of the prettiest rural roads in Sharon. The town has over 7 Jewish synagogues for you guys. ALSO it's got Crescent Ridge Dairy (ice cream etc..), it's been there for over 75 years. I don't have kids, but I can tell you that it always had a very very good school system.

Sharon has 3 or 4 temples and is on the commuter rail line to Boston. The schools are very good and it is on the commuter rail line to Boston. It's also on Rte. 95.

Irish Catholic here! I lived there a long time ago, we were on the Sharon side of Bay Rd. down past the cemetary on the right. I lived there with 2 of my friends, we rented a contemporary style house. It was because our friends father was a builder down there at one time (*he since passed away) and he built this house for his daughter & her husband at the time but it didn't work out, so they decided she could get a couple of roommates and it was us. They were wonderful people, it was my first landlord situation, the house was beautiful all furnished and everything, it was awesome actually! It was a hoot because we lived in the City for years and moving down there was the first time we didn't hear the cop cars flying by and the fire trucks! I remember it was SO SO peaceful living there, but like I said, it took us a couple of years to get used to that type of quietness coming from the heart of the city! Now I can't see myself back in the city as much as I miss it, it never leaves you!

Not Jewish either and I agree that Sharon is very nice. Very good schools! We looked at a few houses and the property tax is just very high. Houses are expensive too! So it depends on your budget and how you would like to live (condo, single fam., renting. But if you can afford it you can't go wrong with Sharon.

No, it's not cheap by any means, but it's more affordable than the towns the original poster mentioned. Not as crowded either, but not the sleepy, rural area it used to be.
