I am not saying it's not normal, but in some cases it can cause confusion to those that are not from around here, or familiar with our roads. I was more speaking to the quality of our highways and major roadways.

Here's an example - when one is driving on 95 through Westwood, they are going on 95 north and route 1 south.

Well, "the 95" (as they say in Calif) was supposed to run on its own alignment from Hyde Park up through Boston, incorporate the Northeast Expressway (no one calls it that do they?) and then continue on through the Lynn Woods to pick up the existing 95 north at about Danvers. After all that was cancelled, rather than leave a gap they decided to renumber 128 as I-95.
