You are required to get the car titled in your name once you receive the title from the old owner. Individuals can't just sign the original title over more than once. Each time the car ownership transfers it has to be retitled in the new owners name. Massachusetts titles only have 1 space for ownership transfers from individual to individual.

The fact that the old owner didn't do that means something isn't right.
