If you're a beginner, or have very young children, try Wachusett. It's about an hour from Boston, but is roughly 1/2 the size of the bigger areas in NH and VT. There are two mountains in NH that are roughly 2 hours away - Sunapee and Gunstock. They're both mid-sized mountains that will appeal to intermediate skiers and teenagers. Everything else is over 2 hours away.

I think they call it the lift ticket. If you don't take the lift, I don't think they check. I recall he says it takes an hour to walk up and 5 minutes to come down.

Go ahead... ask your kids to walk up Wachusett... see what they'll call you (when most kids nowadays will not even walk to school 2miles away)

Well you have a point. But what I don't like about skiing in this part of the country is waiting for the lift and taking the lift, all of which can take 20 min or more depending on crowds, and then you have that same 5 minute ride down. I like a looooong run down the mountain.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, it really helps out when you haven't gone skiing in the area yet. I think any ski resort will be better than what we had in the Midwest :-)

eslteacher is on a distinguished road
Wachusett is really crowded. Sunapee has a great learn to ski program for kids and adults.
