I hear the high pitched evening trill in every conservation area I drive by.

2015 is going to be a very good year for bats.

It is? The white nose fungus has really decimated them. I've not heard of any bounce back. Some of the Massachusetts species are being considered for Federal listing now at some level because of the toll taken, especially on cave bats.

I know I have been reading up about that problem. The call of the bat is sweet music to my ears.

I heard them in Burlington, Carlisle, Acton and other places this spring.

Let's hope so, they eat over 1000 mosquitoes per hour.

Are you sure it's bats, and not, say, peepers that you're hearing?

I think you are right. I just compared sound clips and I think what I heard was peepers. I thought all frogs croaked like the tree frogs I have around where I live. Peepers are just as good for keeping down the mosquito population, thus I cordially welcome them same as I would bats.

They don't fly as well, though.

I'd say its peepers. Driving by a wet area the other evening we heard them and it was really loud. It must be mating season and a sure sign of Spring.

We have a bat house on our property (must have been installed by previous home owners) and I love watching them on summer evenings. Haven't seen any yet this spring, but hope to see them more as it warms up.
