Public transit in N Central Mass is generally abysmal except the commuter rail. The two-train method is the most reliable, or you could try the Peter Pan to Leominster then a cab suggestion.

Thanks so much! I like the idea of taking a Peter Pan bus to Leominster then maybe I can ask my friends to give me a ride. They wanted to pick me up in Fitchburg and give me a ride to their place in Petersham. Google maps tell me that Leominster is about the same distance from Petersham.

Shoot. If Petersham is the end goal than Greenfield might be a better bet. They're roughly the same distance to each other and Greenfield gets a train from NYC.

Wish you mentioned Petersham at the start!

Train to Northampton, bus to Amherst; have friends pick you up there. To my mind, that would be the best way.

lol sorry! my friends told me they would pick me up from Fitchburg. I have no idea about the area.
I looked it up. It's about 30 miles from Petersham.
Leominster is about 29 miles. Almost the same, if I am correct.

is this the bus you are talking about?
PVTA Schedules

I am assuming the bus station is near where I'll get off the train, right?

Or you could do Peter Pan bus or Amtrak to Greenfield (bus is cheaper), then take the local FRTA from Greenfield to Orange or Athol, have them pick you up there just 15 min away from Petersham.

Have you tried any of the Transit apps? They will calculate all the various permutations (bus alone, bus + train, amtrak + commuter rail). I am dealing with same issue. I can drive to NJ in 4 hrs, but this trip I need to take public transit, its going to take me 7 hrs.

Amtrak doesn't get to Greenfield in time to catch the bus.

You were correct; Peter Pan to Leominster does require two transfers. It's still faster than going thorough Boston, though (which itself requires two transfers, to the subway and commuter rail).

I wasn't implying that a five hour layover in Gardner was realistic.
