In all honesty, I feel if parents are so concerned about sending their kids to a good school, public schools are not a good choice. Granted, Sandwich and Nauset and usually ranked as the best on the Cape for public schools, but public schools cannot compete with private schools as far as a good education and the quality of the students. I went to both public and private school growing up and I have to say that most of the kids who attend private school have a much better upbringing and there is far less riff raff and kids from the wrong side of the track. It was a culture shock going from private to public school and I didn't enjoy it at all. Two completely different experiences. I say if you can afford it, send your kids to a private school.

I'd agree with the Nauset schools assessment. They are nice towns too.
I don't know anything about Sandwich, but I will say that Massachusetts has many good public schools, in many cases far exceeding what you'd find in a typical private school. The private school "superiority" myth derives from a handful of prestigious schools (like Andover Academy) - all the rest pretty much rely on this fantasy to bolster their cause. And naturally people who spend money on an average private school feel compelled to justify their choice.
If I were graduating from High School, I would much rather say I had attended a Lincoln-Sudbury, a Weston, a Boston Latin, a Duxbury, etc. public High school than one of the numerous benign private schools.

I'm glad to hear all the good stuff on Sandwich schools. My oldest daughter has been in the Integrated Preschool (at Wing school) for the last two years and we love it. I can't say on the other schools as we haven't had experience with them yet, but it's nice to hear they are often ranked #1. And as much as we love the Intergrated Preschool, I think it's fairly hard to get into if your child didn't have Early Intervention (or is a sibling of a previous child in the program). But it's worth checking on as the teachers and program are wonderful!

Private schools have problems with sex, drugs, cyber bullying, sexting and alcohol just like public schools do. The problems are just well hidden as parents lawyer up at the first sign of trouble and school administrators scramble to protect the good name of the school.

Yes, for 25K+ a year, your child can get a phenomenal education. I will not argue that. Kids go on to excellent colleges, well prepared for the academics.

Kids needs to learn to live in the real world. To think you can keep a child in a bubble for their most formative years of education and then send them off to college, fully prepared for the harsh realities of society is naive.

Do your kid a favor and live in Sandwich if you're going to live on the Cape year round. Lower Cape (Nauset) has a lot more drug issues than Sandwich. I would move closer to Boston to be around more culture!

Hi all,

We recently moved to the Cape Cod with 2 toddlers. Our next move is to start house shopping. Being close to Cape Cod hospital is important to us, along with school system.

What are the thoughts on the school systems in the Cape? The general consensus from these previous posts trended towards the sandwich school district. Is this still true for 2015? Would East Sandwich be included?

As a side note, I have heard and read great things about Sturgis Charter School, but was surprised to see almost none of the the grads went to an Ivy league school. Does anyone have any thoughts on why Sturgis grads seemed to be getting passed up when it seems to have such an excellent education?

Sturgis Charter Public School in HYANNIS, MA | Best High Schools | US News

Sandwich and Nauset are still very viable districts. As you can see Sturgis was ranked #1 in MA, #32 nationally. As far as percentage going to Ivy League schools, it may be a case of students turning down them, rather than vice versa. East Sandwich is part of the Town of Sandwich, so yes it would be included.
