When we looked into this earlier last year, a lot of opinions seemed to favor those in West Roxbury.

However, due to the (recently modified) lottery system, moving in to the town meant we would be at the bottom of the list for our selected choices, and therefore likely assigned to the least desirable school. My understanding was that the recent modifications meant that you stay closer to your home, but, they still gave the example that if we live in West Roxbury, we may be assigned out as far as Hyde Park, and there was no guarantee that our children would be assigned to the same school, at least initially.

Thanks. That is helpful. What school system did you end up using, if not BPS.

We ended up moving outside the city to Natick, MA. Great school district, still an active town feel to it, comparable (if not slightly cheaper) real estate to West Roxbury, and commuter rail access to Fenway, Back Bay and South Station.
