Hi everybody,
We are looking for a walkable/bikeable town on the Cape with good public schools, libraries, shopping, and entertainment. What towns do you recommend? Thanks!

Falmouth is nice and has all the amenities you're asking for. You would have to live close to Main St in the center of town if you want to walk or bike everywhere. The only issue is the schools are not as great in town, and are a lot better in North Falmouth, which is not as walkable though.

Falmouth, Barnstable (the Hyannis section), Wellfleet, Provincetown.

My pick would be Wellfleet or Chatham, depending on how big of a downtown you are looking for. Falmouth and Hyannis don't have good schools.

This^^^. But neither is cheap to live in.

Yes, I was going to say Chatham.

Any town on the Cape is going to have the same school system problem. A large fraction of the parents have service sector jobs where they are unemployed in the winter. You're never going to get the same fraction of highly engaged college educated parents as you'd see in a gold-plated Boston suburb. That drags the school rating down.

I'd vote Falmouth. You have the WHOI influence in the community and there's something of a pulse in the winter. You don't have to deal with the mid-cape highway to get off cape.

Well, I'm prejudiced as I live in Wellfleet. None the less, I'm not sure what your goal is? Do you wish to move here with your family? Size/age of family? Type of work you do? Type of housing you're looking for? These are just some of the questions you might give us info on if you want some insightful response to your inquiry.

Falmouth. Nice, walkable downtown. Two real supermarkets and a couple of markets. A Walmart for necessities. Fantastic bakery. Very nice library. Yes, many of the families with kids in the schools are low level worker bees in service sector, but there are also families where the parents are highly educated, working at the MBL, WHOI, and other scientific institutions in the area. And of course, you can always bike down to Woods Hole. You're only 15-20 minutes from the Bourne Bridge, and there's never any traffic on the highway from the bridge to Falmouth, nor the other way, unless you're trying to get off the Cape at the end of a holiday weekend.
