It's actually not that tough. The median house price in Massachusetts is about $330k so $900k puts you far above that and is still more than most people will ever be able to spend on a house.

What's tough is you want the best of everything at a budget that doesn't support that (It would take $1.5 million+ to get EVERYTHING on your wish list). If you were willing to get a condo or send your kids to private school you could have your 20 minute commute, whereas most people in this region simply cannot have that under any circumstances no matter how many sacrifices they're willing to make.

OP

Are you presently in MA and looking? If not, I might consider taking my $900K and relocating elsewhere. For $900K one can live large in many places other then Boston.

Also nobody has mentioned West Roxbury. Close to Longwood.

They want good public schools which rules out West Roxbury.

Nobody has mentioned it because of the schools.

OP probably has a job in Longwood. It's not so easy to just give up a job and decide you're going someplace different. I'd say having the 900K is probably dependent upon that job, too.

Save money on the house. Save time on the commute. Send kids to private schools.
