Actually, Patriot's Day is the 3rd Monday in April. It's the same day as the Boston Marathon. I don't get a paid holiday from my employer on that day either, but I take the day off because I like to watch the marathon.

If you have to explain a joke, I guess it's not funny.

It's also the 11:00 Red Sox game where you watch the Marathon finish afterwards.

Years back when I lived in MA, my golf club had a golf Tournament on Columbus Day that we called the Italian Open. People had to dress in Green, White, and Red (Italian flag colors). There were some garish outfits. It basically was a drinking/eating event (it started with Sambuca and coffee for breakfast) and ended with a big Italian dinner. We had a great time. I always think about it on Columbus Day.

I had it off. Took Friday off and stretched it to a 4-day weekend.

Which Worcester colleges had classes? I was under the impression all were closed for the day.

In my experience, Columbus Day is more recognized by local companies than national ones. Around here it is the last holiday weekend when people can really get away for a vacation that does not involve snow sports, the fact that it usually coincides with peak foliage means that most families do some kind of touristy thing. It is kind of like a tax holiday in that sense - it brings in an awful lot of tourist dollars to parts of the states that might otherwise not get much.
