Default Tell me about Scituate?

Hi there,
my wife and me are thinking about moving to Scituate.

How is life down there? Are there decent restaurants? What about grocery stores? We read about beaches, how are they?

What will be the impact of the newly opened Greenbusch line on Scituate?

Thanks a lot in advance

I grew up in Scituate, and lived there for a short time after college. I believe Scituate was a great place to grow up. I think the schools have improved since I graduated in 99, but the overall quality of the education is good. It's a very suburban life, and in order to do a lot of activities you'll have to leave the town. It may be difficult to break into a social scene being a newcomer. I know my girlfriend had issues making friends for a bit since she is not a Massachusetts native.

There is a supermarket in town, but I recommend driving to Cohasset to the Shaw's or Stop and Shop on Route 3A. It's a short drive.

There are plenty of quality restaurants such as the Barker Tavern at the high end to more casual places such as the Mill Wharf, TKO Malley's and the Satuit Tavern. I find Maria's and Cosmo's to be decent sandwich shops as well.

The beaches used to be much better, but storms and erosion are doing a good job of destroying them. Minot beach is nearly gone, but I believe Peggoty and Egypt beaches are still decent quality. I haven't been to a beach in Scituate in years so I can't comment too much on them.

I've read that many commuters are taking a while to warm up to the Greenbush line, but it makes commuting into Boston a breeze. The train takes you directly to South Station which is within walking distance of the financial district and downtown crossing of Boston. You could also take the Red Line for a short distance to these areas as well.

I can try to answer more specific questions as well if you have them.

My family owned a summer house in the North Scituate (Minot P.O.) area for 23 years. It has been 30 years since we sold that house, but I drive down to see Scituate periodically and 3 years ago we stayed at a motel in Scituate Harbor and got to look around some more.

Scituate has these outstanding qualities:

Unbelievably beautiful. A true New England seacoast town, with many charming houses.

The air is so clean!

The harbor has wonderful seafood restaurants, shops for locals (practical) and for tourists and a good supermarket.

The beaches are still great. There are lovely golf courses and the marshes are gorgeous.

The commute by train to Boston, IMO, makes it an extremely desirable place in which to live. Also, Scituate is surrounded by fabulous towns: Cohasset, Hingham, Norwell and Marshfield.

On a Sunday,I can testify that with no rush hour traffic you will drive to Boston in less than half and hour, door to door. Rush hour traffic is hell.

Scituate has traditionally been heavily old Yankee and now many are families of Irish descent.

Default Scituate

I live in Scituate now, it isn't my favorite town, but the harbors nice and TKO M'alley's is the best, also in the summer check out dribbles, it's a good ice cream place, Maria's is some of the best pizza around. Jenkin's is brand new and is a very up to date school, Hatherly is a good school with small class sizes, but they are redistricting next year so that may not stay, an old joke is that Hatherly used to be called the Country Club School, but not so much anymore. Wampatuck needs alot of work done but has a great princial and Cushing has great test scores and fantastic teachers. Gates needs alot of work done, and the high school is in fair condition. The office staff is very nice there.
