As most parents know, the plethora of extracurricular activities around here can be difficult to sort through - so I thought I'd try here.

I'm looking for after-school or weekend classes for computer programming, geared towards middle-school aged kids. I do see some Scratch programming classes offered via a type of summer camp through a STEM program or something, but I am looking for a course where the kids can attend weekly or so, and learn a more advanced language.

I'm thinking something like Russian School of Math, but for programming.

Thanks!

I'm interested in this as well. Right now my wife sits with our kids on the weekends and walks them through coding sessions using online resources. However, she has an engineering background so it's easier for her to do this than it would be for a parent without a technical background. We use http://studio.code.org

Empow Studios | Home

Found this in Lexington. I have checked out studio code before. I have to start doing this with my 8-year old. Maybe I will learn something too!

Does your town have a community education program? Our town's community education program regularly offers these types of classes for kids.

We did a Lego thing at Empow once and I was really impressed.

Einstein's workshop in Burlington also has Scratch coding and Robotics classes. Classes on Saturday and Sunday too.

May I suggest as well exploring the free or cheap online coding classes such as CodeAcademy and MIT's open courses? There are also lots of good tutorials on YouTube.

Speaking as someone with a Comp Sci degree I would suggest that your child, depending on age and level, may benefit more from reinforcing their fundamental mathematics before diving too far into advanced programming. The math will be what helps them get into a rigorous Comp Sci or other Stem program at a great engineering school.
