I will have a job in Worcester and my husband will hopefully find something in Boston. Our son is only 10 months old so we don't have to worry about schools just yet but I want an area where the schools are at least decent. One of the most important things to me is to be in a neighborhood where I can walk the dog and take the baby in the stroller at any time of the day or night. The problem is that we only have a budget of 200k.

I think the only way you're going to achieve that is by buying a condo, unfortunately.

I would say something very small in Leominster. It might not be exciting but it's safe enough. That's all I got.
Edit...might look in Clinton but nothing closer to Boston I would guess.

Tough budget for our expensive RE. SF is less likely, best bet to concentrate on condos or rent and save for buying a house later on.

Lower the price of RE, more compromises you have to make about neighborhood and location, or schools, condition and commute.

I would add Grafton or maybe even Franklin if commute is doable.

Good luck.

There's a small 3 bedroom house in Franklin for 144, 900. Needs interior cosmetic work, but it has a decent yard.

It's a short sale which comes with plenty of complications, not to mention all the renovations needed.

Really $200k isn't enough to buy a house in this region and even a condo is iffy once you factor in condo fees. OP would be best off renting and trying to save up for a bigger house.

$200K is a good down payment for a house in Greater Boston.

You won't find much. Ive seen some priced that low in the boston area in areas like mattapan, dorchester, quincy or hyde park-not in great areas of those places (none of mattapan is good). Other than that you won't find much unless you're very far out of boston.

On another note why don't people just use a site like zillow or redfin to get these answers right away and see what's out there?

Zillow or Redfin can't tell you what towns are safe or what areas to avoid or any of that kind of thing.

I thought they did include crime stats. Also some people's ideas of safe are different than others. I'd feel safe living in Dorchester or hyde park but another person might not. It's just odd to me that so many people come here asking where they should live.
