....and I am more than happy to expound: I found it extremely difficult to communicate with three of them. The foreman spoke some English but did no care to translate. This made a already stressful 2 days even harder.
I did make a point of trying to find out where they are from and how they came over. After all I am also an immigrant.

Are you driving up? Would it be possible to rent a small trailer for the antiques and move them yourself, leaving the other stuff to the movers?

We are going to be driving up, but we're going to a furnished rental, not a new "forever" house.

Plus, the corner cupboard is 6'3" x 4' x 3 1/2' and weighs probably a couple hundred pounds, and the dresser probably weighs easily 100#s, so there's no way we could fit these things in our minivan, or lift them...

However, yes, I am brining some of the smaller things with us.

Most of what I packed into the largest U-haul trailer they have was breakable and NOT one thing was broken when I unpacked it here.
My wife got a huge roll of bubble & special boxes for our porcelain. We also rented a mini van and put a full size grandfather clock into it along with an assortment of other antiques & drove it down to Charlotte. My brother, on the other hand, stuffed his Jaguar & Saab full of silver, antiques, porcelain & other stuff & left them sitting on the street across from the house for a couple days.
When we unloaded all the cubes in Charlotte we had to rent a 16' pod on the side of the house because we were stuffed to the gills with stuff.

Moving is such fun, right up there with oral surgery and having broken bones set.
