Living in town, I'm on that road almost daily. It's a state road and it's a two lane road. Because it's poorly striped, it's treated as a four lane road although most of it isn't adequate for 4 lanes. The state notified the town in the summer of 2014 of repaving it with 2 weeks notice and asked the town to tell them how they wanted it striped. Because of the short notice, the selectman made no decision and the state striped it as it was.

When Billerica went to 2 lanes 15 years ago, they were up in arms. Now that it's the norm, people are fine with it. The problem with making it a true 2 lanes in Burlington is that it is used as an access road to 128 from Billerica and Wilmington. Traffic would be horrible if it went to 2 lanes.

imagine single file from South Bedford to Winn St. it would be a disaster during rush hour.

Well from South Bedford to Herb Chambers it is single file or closer to single and a half file - that yellow line is strictly a recommendation isn't it?

But a single lane pretty much the whole way from Mall Rd to Francis Wyman Rd would truly be a disaster.

Do you have free company parking in Kenmore Sq.? If not, that can cost as much as the mortgage on a house in your stated price range.

Also, you mentioned a town with a drug issue. I'm sure some towns are much worse than others, but fwiw some very expensive Boston suburbs have herion or similar problems at the high schools. I've never heard of it deterring anyone from buying in any of those towns (and I've been here for a long time). So I'd dig deeper into that issue before crossing a town off your list.
