Looking to buy a vehicle in MA and will be paying with a personal check. It just occurred to me that since we haven't switched banks yet it may cause an issue trying to buy a car at a dealership with a personal check from an out of state bank.
I did call a couple dealerships who gave me the run around "let me talk to finance dept" (and subsequently transferred to someone who only wanted to talk about the low rate they could get me) or said they weren't sure but if I came down to check out what's on the lot, they'll let me know what they can do
Has anyone paid for a car with a personal check? What dealership did you go to?

I did with my most recent car. Paid with a personal check completely and no problem. They did check my credit and validated my residence and such but it took less than 10 minutes. Also, can't you simply purchase a bank check to pay for the car?
Most dealers will let you put a couple grand on a personal check (approximately $2k or so). After that most will want a cashier's check or bank check. Being local has nothing to do with it- they won't take personal checks in general because they're afraid of check kiting.

My bank is out of state so until we open new account here we can't get a bank check. Unless, could we? Would that be possible? Could I use my debit card at a different bank to make a cashiers check?

You might be able to pay via wire transfer...Probably the easiest solution to your problem.

I don't know the answer to your questions but as far as I know, opening an account is really easy and you can transfer any amount into it by just giving the routing number and acct number to the folks at your new bank. You should probably talk to your new bank representative and see what they can do to help you. My dealership sold us our last two cars so they know us quite well (maybe that's the difference, IDK). If you must know, it's Mercedes in Westwood.
