Try East Ocean City, on Beach St. in Chinatown. They have fish tanks where you can see the fish that you're going to be eating. The food is the best in Boston. Service is sometimes slow, though it's worth it for the terrific food.
I can also recommend Penang, on Washington St. It isn't Chinese; the food is Malaysian, and it's absolutely wonderful. This place is my all time favorite Asian restaurant.
Enjoy!

I prefer Imperial Seafood (formerly Imperial Teahouse) for dim sum. China Pearl has dim sum every morning of the week starting at 11 though, so it's sometimes nice to go if you have time during the week because it's less hectic! Imperial Seafood is only weekends.
Also, check out the Eldo Cake House and the adjoining candy store. The candy store is VERY cool- try the preserved rose petals!
My favorite straight Chinese food is at Pearl Villa which is a few doors down from China Pearl. Priced VERY reasonably and excellent.

Suburbs
Dont be scared. Come out to the suburbs ....Take the kids to Horn Pond in Woburn for a fun climb up the mountain and walk around the lake!
Then go to The China Delight afterwards in Woburn Center.
Awesome Chinese take-out food they have a small sit down area as well!!!

I also like the Fen Yang house in Winchester on route 38 (main st.)
and the China Sky in Winchester Center.
China Wok is ok too.

Hands down I'd say Buddha's Delight 5 Beach Street. It's a vegetarian place that does mock meat recipes as well as some tofu/vegetable dishes. Their "chicken fingers" are crazy good. It's my 5 year olds favorite place to eat (and we're not vegetarians).

YES, China Pearl in Boston's Chinatown located at 9 Tyler Street is wonderful, GO there! If you're ever up on the north shore of Boston in the city of Peabody? Go to Su Chang's Restaurant! It's located at 373 Lowell Street, sort of near the North Shore Mall. There's a side hilly type street to the right of the Mall where the Long's Jeweler's is located and Tony's Tailor Shop, drive all the way to the end of it, even past Barnes & Nobles straight all the way until you see the lights facing you and across the way you'll see Su Chang's! You can't miss it there, it's the prettiest building you'll see there with their gorgeous white curtains! It's got a fantastic atmosphere here too and it's extremely clean, with fantastic cuisine, no matter when you go here, lunch or dinner. I would say it's now our favorite chinese restaurant on the North Shore instead of the "Kowloon" in Saugus on Rte 1 which has kind of gone down hill these days, Kowloon's used to be SO much better in it's hay day, although they do extremely well with their comedy shows now.
Have fun!

Imperial has gone way downhill. Chow Chau for the black bean clams during dim sum. Imagine if we lived in Pittsburgh and couldn't get dim sum?
