My husband and I will be relocating and I have been researching areas for us to look for rentals. He will be at Hanscom and I will be in the Longwood Medical area. Realistically, I think it will be more difficult for me to get to work and will not be driving into work due to parking fees. We have children, so good schools are important to us. We will be renting while we look for a home and we sell our homes. We understand the cost of living is a lot more than where we are now, however we are paying for private school now so we are hoping to no longer have that cost. What also makes it difficult is that we have dogs, and we understand that there are probably more dog-friendly areas than others. What towns should we be focusing on? Any commute under appx an hour is acceptable (his commute is just over an hour now and mine is just under an hour). Thanks!

I guess your husband will need to cross Rte 128 (I 95) and you need to get through traffic to get to the Longwood area: I love Newton, you might consider Auburndale or Newton Centre, both part of Newton, the schools are top and the houses have good yards and dogs would be welcomed.

If you moved to a part of Newton near the Green Line, you'd be in heaven since it goes to Longwood. Newton Upper Falls might be ideal, now that I think of it! Look for a place on the Green Line. I know that you will not find anything for less than $800,000 and probably it would be more, however. More like $1,000,000 if you need the room for a family. That's the market nowadays.

You could take the commuter rail to work and live someplace accessible to 128/95. Take a look at the rail lines. You'd get off at Ruggles and catch a shuttle bus right to Longwood. Quickly. Shuttle Information | MASCO

Commuter Line at Ruggles will take you to several desirable towns: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruggles_(MBTA_station)

Needham is highly desirable, hopefully affordable for you if you have professional jobs and the schools are excellent. Just an example of a town you could both get to without too much hassle.

What is your budget, and how many and what type of dogs do you have?

The dogs are likely going to be a big problem and will eliminate many rentals, as some have size, breed and number of dogs restrictions.

Towns along Rt2 are probably your best bet at both of you having a good commute. Downside is, towns along rt 2 are not cheap by any means. What's your budget?

And dogs will make finding a rental particularly tricky.
