Does anyone have experience with Digsafe? Do they arrange for the various utility companies to put little colored flags on your yard. Are you still allowed to excavate *within* the boundaries they mark up?

I'm thinking of putting an outdoor walkway over my water service line. Bad idea?
And the driveway that needs to be repaired/redo in the future probably sits on the gas line.

Dm84 is right. If you hit something and didn't call, have fun paying for it. Those gas lines people complain about paying $20k for installation will be billed to you. If you hit something and the mark out missed it, you aren't liable. That alone is worth it.

Yes, Digsafe arranges to have the utilities come out and mark with the flags and spray paint. You can dig in those areas but having it marked out allows whoever is digging to do so carefully. Utility lines typically are at least 36" deep so putting a walkway or driveway over them shouldn't be an issue.

My findings is that dog safe is hit or miss on private property. If they can't pick it up with their detectors, most towns records from the street to your home are terrible or non existent.

Also if you are hiring someone to do this, put it in their contract that they are responsible for dig safe. They have more experience in it than you and would probably prefer to coordinate it.

I'm building a 100' stone wall & I need to dump 40 tons of rocks on my yard. Should I call digsafe? Could I crush water or gas line?

If in doubt just call. It's free.
