I went with your advice and looked at Niche's school ranking, which is somehow different than rankings that depend on test scores only. For instance Cambridge, which is closer to Umass and more walkable than Newton, got an A. It's really confusing for me to decide. Thanks anyhow for your helpful suggestion!

Take my opinion for what it is worth, but I have heard great things about Cambridge special needs programs. Cambridge spends a ton of money on schools- I believe their per pupil expenditure is one of the highest in the state at over 20K per kid. This allows the school district to offer very robust special needs programs.
I know of a few families who were very happy with the school offerings for special needs. The teachers very proactive in identifying children who were not on IEPs, but may need extra help (or have an undiagnosed learning disability). Quite the opposite of what I have heard of most school districts who will fight tooth and nail against any mention of a potential IEP.

I have done a lot of research for my own child and, given your (good) budget, I would go with Newton or Brookline. Great for special and regular ed. Very nice places to live as well.

I would see if Sharon has a SEPAC Facebook group. That's usually a good way.

On question is - will the students accept the special needs child into their social group or will the child be isolated from the rest of the kids even though he or she gets to sit in the same classeoom? You can do good special needs education inside the school but will the special needs student be able to integrate into society after graduation? Newton has probably the most qualified special needs staff I would imagine. Brookline would be OK. Cambridge might be OK. Don’t know about somerville. Boston for all the low income students can have GREAT special needs support. Why don’t you join some Facebook special needs groups for families and ask them directly. There are a few Montessouri schools popping up that might be good. Unfortunately, it’s ewually up to you to be the other teacher at home but all you need is one or two competent teachers and a small group of friends to succeed through school
