Stop Off-Roading; It's destroying our environment!
Why would anyone on this forum want to help you? Riding ATVs around the woods erodes the soil and ruins the peace and quiet for any animal who lives there; plus the noise drives the neighbors crazy. Why not get out and hike in the woods - you'll get some exercise and leave the woods in the condition they were meant to be in. Learn to respect the beauty of nature!
Here is an excerpt from a recent article about the horrible damage the off-roaders are doing to Coy's Hill: Stopping traffic; Off-roaders unwelcome at Coy Hill.(LOCAL
"The damage that Jeeps have done to the Coy Hill Wildlife Management Area is as bad as I've seen on any of the 35,000 acres of wildlife management land here in Worcester County," Mr. Davis said.

I unlike other people arent there to destroy the land. i like to go to the top of mountains and look out over the land in the quiet. if you have an atv such as i do they have special modes you can put them in so they DONT destroy the land. and when you go hunting, they have silencers that go on your exhaust so there not loud. its the 2 stroke sport quads and the 4 stroke ones with aftermarket pipes on them. Most of the problem is the trucks going up coys hill, not the little atvs and dirt bikes. you can go up that road just not off of that road, which is where i get off my four wheeler and chain it up, and backpack up there. not everyone who goes out there is out to destroy the environment. i think you need to look at both sides of the situation and know about both, the people trying to savve the land and the people riding, not everyone is disrespectful to property. Thank you for your input though.

Airdaly is right. If you want to enjoy the outdoors, why don't you WALK to the top of the hill instead of polluting the air and disrupting natural habitats.

I think the OP deserves some respect for educating themselves about how to quiet the machines and to think about riding responsibly. Some parks like Gilbert State Park have been totally ruined by ATVs and other motorized vehicles, and I confess I hate the noise and the stench of the things, and don't like sharing parks with them. But I'm impressed by the OPs response.

Jet ski manufacturers claim the same thing that they have "baffles" that muffle the sound. These provide only minimal sound reduction, and unfortunately, according to audio experts, it is the constant variation in sound, not the decibel level itself, that is most disruptive to wildlife.
Yes, it's true there are some variation to how much damage one individual does. Some kids get their thrills from destruction and others are a little more in check with these things. But the use of a high-powered machine like this in a wildlife area itself is the source of the problem.

I'm a senior citizen and I ride an ATV because I would never be seeing the woods or walking up any hill otherwise.
ATV's used to be noisy 25 years ago but there's very strict Federal noise standards now. My Honda ATV, straight from the factory is much quieter than any gas lawn mower you'll find for sale anywhere, certainly way quieter than a home owner or commercial grade weed whacker or leaf blower. You can't even hear the engine 25 feet away from it.
It's ludicrous to say they stink. What your dog lives at the edge of someone's lawn stinks. A diesel Volkswagen, a wood stove, or a back yard barbeque stinks. An ATV has no practically no odor compared to that.
If they're damaging any ground surface that's operator mischief, not the correct operation of the machine. I ride all over my property and you won't see tracks or damage anywhere.

thank you very much Willdufauve. finally someone on my side. All i have to say is i asked a simple question about where to ride. I have a hard enough time just riding on my own 2 acres without cops giving me a hard time. Also, your right my machine isn't much louder than a weedwacker or a lawn mower. NOR evven an automobile, and people drive by trucks all the time. Its how you ride and all of us ATVers DO NOT ride the same. To those of you who have a problem with this topic if you dont have anything good to say about it, then why are you wasting your time in this topic. I don't go putting my 2 cents into your other topics that i disagree with. I think people need to grow up. It's amazing that a 25 year old kid can be so much more grown up then someone older then him. Bottom line is grow up, act your age, and don't go around looking to pick fights, otherwise your just as ignorant as the young kids who ARE tearing up the woods.

and as for walking up to the top, i have broken my foot twice and my leg once, and walking over an hour and a half to the top to see the beautiful view I simply can't do anymore. That is why i can't walk the whole way. You can legaly ride halfway to 3/4s of the way up due to the fact that it is a legal road, and no-ones ownes that part. once yuou get off that part, you are illegally riding once you go off that path. I know this because i have been up there talking to the EPs. they sit up there and tell people they can travel up there but if they go off the road then they risk getting arressted, or a ticket. Once you arrive to that point its only a 15 minutes walk to the top. trust me if i could walk the whole thing i would. But unfortunatly i can't do to a drunk driver.

What I don't understand is someone asked a question about a place to ATV, and all he/she received was a bunch of people preaching environment stuff. Don't get me wrong I care about the environment but if someone wants to ATV they are going to ATV, snowmobile, drive their H2. You won't convince them otherwise by lecturing them about how it effects the environment.
I have a sports car and I often go for "joy rides" all over the place enjoying what the United States has to offer. I appreciate the scenery and everything.
I think your best bet is in NH or I know there are large places in Maine also. Plus you won't get grief from all the MA people who want to tell you what to do.
