Actually the Roma is not in downtown Haverhill anymore (most people don't remember THAT) but is across the river in Bradford now (© 2005 The Roma Restaurant) The Clam Box is ok, but not worth the drive for me (as McIntyre's always was). Browns in Seabrook is OK as well, Markey's across the street is better tho. I think the big draw at Browns was always the fact that in our early 20's we could bring in a cooler of beer/wine. One of the few BYOB seafood joints I know of. The country club has been completely done over (I used to work catering there back in my late teens, we're going back a few years with that one!!) Thanks for the memories

I've been to the Clam Box a few times and I think it's good... but I grew up in Georgia and never had seafood! There's also Brown's in Seabrook with a view of the nuclear plant (which my dad always told us was why the scallops were so big!) but that has gone downhill as well.

The Roma in Haverhill is gone, right? At least, that's what I last heard. That was part of the trifecta of grandparent dining along with the Haverhill Country Club and really bad Chinese at the Hawaiian Isle.

I've always heard of the Roma but never tried it. A guy I work with said that he lives near it and it's not what it used to be, he said it went down hill...Some day I'd still like to go there for dinner to see for myself because a lot of people (like my elderly mom!) would definitely enjoy it there regardless!

I remember Bailey's Ice Cream shops all over Boston & beyond! There hot fudge was the best on their sundae's. In the summer we'd get their lime rickey's to go.

We'd go to Filene's Basement shopping on our lunch hour; when I worked in the financial district and we'd stop at the "Brigham's" on Franklin Street that turned into a "Finagle a bagle" shop and God knows what else after that, it's probably a financial office now on that corner! In any case, we'd run up to Filene's Basement and get in line at that Brighams for a frappe to bring it back to the office at 5 of 1 OR 3 minutes of 2 when we sat down to drink it, hiding our bags under the desk! Did any of you ever have the guy drop a raw egg in the frappe by any chance? Well you had to get in another line all together because there were so many of us that did that. For some strange reason a lot of us thought that this was going to give us energy instead of having a salad or whatever else for lunch, I know that a lot of boxers in the City my grandfathers age did that, so a lot of us tried it and thought it was going to give us protein! Go figure. The bottom line was that it was more important for us to shop down the "B" then to have a good lunch, whatever...!!

I remember Carol's Diner in Medford Square, or was it on that road leading out of Medford Square? That was sooo good in its hay day! We used to go there for breakfast or lunch any hour of the day and night we were in one of their booths.

Paradiddle, The Kowloon isn't what it used to be, or at least that's what we've found lately. Instead, we hit this Su Chang's in Peabody. It's too die for good there! Some day if you're ever in that area, GO there for lunch or dinner. It's the nicest Chinese restaurant around. It's reasonable too, not an arm and a leg for lunch and YES they have the luncheon specials. It's also the cozy atmosphere they have that you'll really like a lot there. They have the prettiest white curtains on their windows all throughout their establishment, wait till you see them, the waitstaff are great there too, they'll get anything you want. It's our new "Kowloon's" that we used to have for many many years, with authenic chinese cuisine that is out of this world good! It's located at 373 Lowell Street in Peabody...you know where the North Shore Mall is? Well, when you get off at the 114 Peabody exit, drive along as if you're going to the North Shore Mall and take that right, it's called Cross Street, where the Bug a Boo Creek is on the corner of the Mall parking lot, you'll see it up on the hill . Any way, go up that hill the Mall will be on your left, you're on Cross Street now, on your right will be Long's Jeweler's facing the Mall and Tony the Tailor shop. Keep driving all the way up this hill until you get to the bottom past the lights all the way and another set of lights you'll see sitting right across the street from that 2nd set of lights "Su Chang's", it's SO easy to get to...nice parking lot too with plenty of parking for lunch any way, we've never been for dinner. We find that you can get in and out of there quick.

SO many extremely good restaurants gone! I remember the S&S Diner in Inman Square and it's good that it's still there! Yes, it's just a plain old diner, with nothing to write home about for food? But it was always good for a late night breakfast or a turkey club & a cup of hot tea!

Did any one on this board ever go to the Brother's Deli in Danvers by any chance? I've never been, I just heard a lot about it and I was wondering what people here thought of the one in Danvers??? Because a Brother's Deli just opened this past Tuesday and they're the same owners as the one in Danvers. It's up in Hampton, NH on Rte 1 in the new plaza that just opened, which by the way they did an amazing job to it! We tried this Brothers for lunch the other day, it was quite a place, and I think they're going to do extremely well there, it's a good location for them.

Just my two cents....nostalgia...here's a restaurant I bet a lot of you don't know of. Do you remember Hector's along Rte 1 in No. Hampton, NH??? Gone but not forgotten, my mother keeps telling me how good it used to be there, I went a few times for lunch, and never thought too much about it, it's a shame that nothing took it's place in that spot where it used to be!

Finally, does any one remember the pecan rolls at the Town Lyne House in Lynnfield!!! They were soooo good. I wish we had their recipe. Right before it closed for good, I took my mother there for lunch for old time sake!

If anyone is familiar with Quincy...anyone remember Eddie's Diner. Now that was the place to go in the middle of the night. The food was bad but the sights were great! It is now a bank.

I remember Eddie's...attracted all kinds of characters! Also remember Roman Gardens and Howdy's (before there was a McDonalds). The first Dunkin Donuts was in Quincy too. Man, I'm old...

Your post made me laugh. I stated the same thing a few posts back.
May I ask you....the Roman Gardens....was that the one on the Southern Artery? My husband and I used to go to an Italian restaurant that we loved andhave never ben able to think of the name of it except ------- Gardens.
If that is the name.thank you!!!!!!!!! Loved that place and it closed abruptly.
I am dating myself to when I was a kid but remember Carrolls? It was the equivalent of a good McDonald's before there was a McDonalds.

Are you from QUincy?

There's one left that I know of in Boston and it's in the Financial District on High Street. They sell their ice cream in all the supermarkets up here.

Brigham's is now in some of the Malls in New England at the various Food Courts. We couldn't believe it when we saw one at the North Shore Mall in Peabody a few months ago! We were SO psyched when we saw that Brighams sitting there!!! We booked it right over to that counter for one of their ice creams so fast, you never saw anything like it in your life! IT was hysterical and then to see other people after us doing the same thing was even more funnier when they recognized that famous name, AND let me tell you something, there ice cream is still awesome in my book, I don't know what we'd all do without a Brigham's around here!!!

Default kemps of burlington

ahh yes, kemps. the tiny, tiny, burger joint up on the hill near bldg 19 1/2.
later on, in the 70s and 80s it was a car dealership office and i cant recall what it is now. we(our family) would stop there on the way to watertown on sundays and get a burger, when i was a little girl . thanks for the memory jolt.

anyone remember the wursthaus in, i think cambridge?

burger chef?

there was also a steak house in tewksbury and the name completly escapes me. anyway, it burned down soon after my first marriage in 1977-78 but the reason im trying to remember it is because i had my wedding reception there..it went something like..wagon wheel... or something similar? something with a western-y name..if anyone can help me out id be grateful. it had a caboose at the back for a dressing room.

thanks ahead of time

wilmington girl
