I loved the York Steak House in Danvers & picking out the dessert was so exciting (always chocolate pudding)...kids just don't get excited about the little things anymore...

Does anyone else remember when the North Shore Mall was the N S Shopping Center?...it was open air and very well decorated during the Christmas season...I had a distant memory of an amusement park at the end and thought it was a dream until one day I saw an antique post card and there it was...the North Shore Shopping Center with an amusement park at the end...and unless I'm dreaming, my mother used to drop me off at a nursery there while she shopped...we're talking 1970ish.

Default Some Favorite Restaurants No Longer With Us

Fontaine's, Dedham -- Loved the spastic neon chicken sign out front more than the chicken dishes inside.

Wursthaus, Cambridge -- I'll always remember the upstairs dining room and all the intellects smoking their pipes and wearing plaid jackets. Pretty good German food, and ultra cozy atmosphere with enough beer selections to please an entire nation of college fraternities.

Nick's Beef and Beer House, Cambridge -- The phony fireplace with multi-colored logs and the double cheeseburger "heart attack" special for under $2.00 were an unbeatable combination, indeed, in this cavernous chow hall.

Acropolis, Cambridge -- The stoic bald host, the waiters sprinting to refill water glasses after one sip, the eight track player looping "Never on Sunday" every five minutes and some delicious baked lamb made the Acropolis a childhood favorite of mine.

Willow Pond, Concord -- The stench of cow dung in the adjacent field, some rude waitresses, stuffed moose on the wall, and some great lobster and oysters made the Willow Pond Kitchen a one-of-a-kind restaurant/bar. Willow Pond also offered frog legs and catfish and pizza that made Elio's seem like Santarpio's. What was a redneck place doing in an upscale town like this?

Cottage Crest, Waltham -- Talk about feeling left out as a teen. I was the only person at the Cottage Crest under the age of 140. Great function facility and a nice place to get an early bird special.

There was also a Lum's in Worcester at the apex where Gold Star Boulevard becomes West Boylston Street. This eventually became a place called Barber's Crossing. I don't know what it is now. I am surprised no one has mentioned Newport Creamery and their exceptional frappe known as an Aweful, Aweful.

Finally:

The Cocke and Kettle-Uxbridge RIP

Yep - Dini's Sea Grill! Suffolk Law School was built on their site. It was said that just about every state and city politician ate lunch there, but I never spotted anybody famous or infamous when I went. Not long after Dini's bit the dust, a brick box was built in Watertown across from the Arsenal Mall parking garage. It housed a restaurant called Dino's Sea Grill. It was obvious what the name was derived from, lol, and the food wasn't all that great so the place was only around for a couple of years. The Aegean restaurant is what took over.

Does no one else miss Krispy Kreme? I lo-o-o-o-oved those doughnuts, and being able to watch them being made was fun. They still have stores down South, where the chain originated, and the lines for getting served continue to be long. But having Verna's around makes up for that loss.

I forgot the North Shore Mall used to be the NS Shopping Center, that's right, I also completely forgot it used to NOT have a roof too...unbelievable...

I remember Dini's restaurant on Tremont Street in downtown Boston very much because my uncle was an attorney in the State House and we used to meet him there for dinner. A lot of politicians ate there in those days, he was one of the "hacks" that loved that stuff. We didn't know who was who back then until years later when it dawned on us who they were and you know how we found out WHO was WHO? Reading about them all in books, NOW they want to do movies about them all, go figure! Well, whatever floats their boat! Dini's was quite the restaurant for seafood back then. That's where you could get lobster newburg and also lobster thermidor, which you never never see on menu's any more in restaurants, you know why? Because the chef's can't be bothered making it we found out, can you imagine taking that off menu's because they're too LAZY to make it! I can't take it any more around here! Way too yuppified for my taste! Hey, do you guys remember when Marliave's WAS Marliave's back then?? I do, oh remember the line used to be around the corner to get IN to the place at lunch AND dinner? I went there when the new owners took over years later to see if it was the same? Oh it definitely was NOT the same place at ALL. What a damn shame. Does any one out there remember Luigi's on Broad Street by any chance? That was a little hole in the wall, but really SO SO good for quick lunch hours! Every one in creation that worked in the financial district went there on pay day, remember? It was in the 70's and early 80's! Does any one remember the woman's clothing store near Brigham's in back of 185 Franklin Street by any chance? It was called "THE PLACE", it was like a Hit or Miss. It's another shop GONE but not forgotten! That place was packed by all of us on pay day!

What about Bailey's Ice Cream shop, wasn't it heaven having them all over town back then? What a shame that they're all gone now, every one of them, gone. Remember the one in downtown Boston on Tremont Street? They had the little metal round ice cream tables and those chairs scattered all around their tiled floor? The place was a gold mine, I wonder if THAT owner took off with all the loot the way the rest of them do now, ya think?!!!! LOL Then there was the one on Franklin Street too. SO many of us would scoot up to Filene's Basement on our lunch hour then fly back with bags and bags of very important items! Run in to "Bailey's" on Franklin Street and wait in line for a coffee or chocolate frappe with a dropped egg in it. The guy that worked there must have thought we were all crazy, but SO many of us did that! I don't know WHY! We must have thought it would give us protein or something. IT was actually gross wasn't it? That was a big thing in the early 70's, LOL. Shopping was our top priority back then, rather then eating lunch!
But then again? Filene's Basement back then was SO worth it in those days, wasn't it? Don't answer me, just reminisce with it for a minute!
The stores in Downtown Crossing NOW? Forget about it...they're NOTHING like they used to be! Nothing like the old days! I guess we ARE turning in to our parents....yikes!

The rotary at Otis AFB wa a diner called The Tin Man...it was the best and then it burned down.

Anyone remember Emerson's in Randolph and Framingham.

Loved York Steak house and The Rustler......

Bailey's Ice Cream parlors is Boston.....when I was pregnant with my daughter I had a caramel sundae with buttercrunch ice cream evey single day. Funny she has never taken to caramel and she is now 28..

I am really dating myself.

The owner of the Tin Man at Otis Rotary rebuilt. Was in there this past summer with my mother. As a young child, I used to help parents deliver Boston Globe to the Boxes in front. Fond memories of my morning donuts and milk!!!

Filenes Basement back in the late 60's was great. $5 dresses at lunch time and the $8 bathing suit Sales.
Do you remember Gilchrists? Had the best macaroon cookies and cream cheese on datenut bread on the menu - can you imagine it is actually forbidden food now. Somehow back then it was good for you.
Jordan's blueberry muffins were awesome, always brought some home after a
trip to Boston.

Oh my goodness can go on and on about all this and to think I was teen in the 60's. As someone said we are becoming are parents and grandparents
tripping down memory lane this time.

I believe the steak house in Tewksbury was called the Branding Iron.
It was on Main St., Route 38.
