York Steak House in Hanover
Use to love going to the York. It's now a Uno's. Like Uno's but rather have the York back.

Unfortunately I have to add Adega in New Bedford to the list of favorites that no longer exist. It was upscale Portuguese and had an EXCELLENT wine selection ("Adega" literally means cellar in Portuguese) in an elegant, modern atmosphere. It's going to be sorely missed though the restaurant that took up it's place is a fresh, organic (mostly local) place called the Fresca Grill and it's operated by an award winning chef. I'll still miss adega though.

Wow, this thread has been fun!
I remember Bailey's and Augustine's. I wonder if the Lido in Lynn is still around. And what about Red's in Salem? They had the best breakfast when I lived there many years ago. The line was out the door. And Heck Allen? What a blast from the past.

Ruth's Kitchen in Brookline
Despite being a goy guy, I used to love stopping in at Ruth's Kitchen (between Coolidge Corner and Allston, on Harvard St) from time to time for some of their deeelicious kosher Chinese food. Everything was made to order from fresh ingredients, and they didn't skimp on portions. Their quality was recognized in the form of the phone's continuously ringing off the hook with catering and take-out orders.
The business' background was interesting in that it was founded by Elliott Kagan, a Jewish veteran of the Army who met the woman who'd become his wife while he served in Korea during the 1950's. She converted to Judaism, and changed her first name to Ruth upon doing so. Hence "Ruth's Kitchen." Since they were Orthodox, their menu selections were glatt kosher. All operations shut down at 2 PM every Friday and didn't resume until the following Monday. It was a family effort of the kind not seen much any more, with the kids pitching in when they got old enough - taking care of orders while tackling schoolwork.
Last night I decided I was in the mood for some Ruth's Kitchen sesame chicken, so strolled up the street to see how late they were open while I waited for a movie to start at the Coolidge Corner Cinema. When I reached the corner of Naples Rd, I was in for a rude shock. A Mexican restaurant occupied the building without a trace of Ruth's Kitchen
Upon arriving home, the first thing I did after logging on was to Google the business. Seems it'd been sold to someone who promptly changed the cuisine type to "Persian" - though the kitchen remained kosher - and then relocated to the Cleveland Circle area sometime during the summer. Now that Ruth's Kitchen is known as "Ora Catering," and no longer has the same culinary repertoire, I thought I'd revive this thread in order to pay my respects. I hope the Kagans are enjoying their well-deserved retirement.

Since it's been mentioned in other places a bunch of times: I remember there being an Aku-Aku right near Exit 16 in Worcester. Never went there, but just remember it being there. I assume it was connected to the ones in the Boston area. Either way, it's now a 99.

"We're going to Thompson's Clam Bar, 'cause that's where the tastiest clams are! In Wychmere Harbor, in Harwich Port, that's where you'll find Thompson's Clam Bar!"
Oh, I remember that song, too! I lived in Harwich from 1963 to 1969, when I was a kid. My best friend's parents belonged to the Wychmere Harbor Club, and I got to tag along with her quite often.
Thanks for the memories. . .

Yow, 'way back in 1981 my family enjoyed a long lunch at Thompson's. What I remember was the translucent plastic awnings on the porch. You could hear the seagulls tromping around and see the bottom of their feet! lol
