But $80K, 2 (maybe 3) kids in daycare, plus renting a house? Prob $1100/kid for daycare, and $2k/month to rent a house? That's going to stretch a budget unless her ex has a $2k/month child support order against him. (and isn't challenging the relocation to begin with)

Of course, that's some assumption on my part. My apologies if any is incorrect, but MA is incredibly expensive to live here on one income
There's always the chance that something can interrupt any income, regardless of the source. All we can do is warn her that daycare is likely more expensive here than where she is now.

Questioning what arrangements she's worked out with her spouse are beyond the scope of the original post of the thread. I have to assume the logistical aspects of that are worked out, for purposes of this thread. It's important to let her know that costs are high here for daycare, but if she believes she can afford it and wants to make the move to be near her brother, then all we can do is answer the questions she poses.

You may want to think about waiting till one, but more likely two, of the kids start school before making the move. If you want to do an au pair/nanny it may work.

Agree.

So i'll just shorten my original statement to: "$80K, 3 kids, some or all in daycare, plus renting a house"...that's gonna be a tight budget.

70-80k is a good income. For what you want OP, it will be tight to say the least. This is an expensive area. That said, you can probably make it work but will just need to consider which compromises you need to make.

I would suggest you go on line and take a look at the cost of rental properties and daycares places. Shouldn't take long, just identify some places and make a few calls to find out child care costs and see if you can swing it. Concentrate on those two things because it's the real estate and daycare costs that'll hurt - the other costs won't vary too much.

Best of luck.

The math just doesn't work, even if you fit all 3 kids in the same room in a 2 BR apartment. Literally her entire take home pay would be sucked up by rent and daycare.

We really need more info from the OP as to income and expenses and if all 3, or just some of the kids are in day-care.

She suggested renting a house, implying possibly 3BR or more, but that alone in MA would probably be in the ballpark of $2000-2500 or more. Of course, costs go down the further you get from Boston but then the issue of commute comes into play.

I just don't know here whole situation or how far she's willing to compromise and bend.

Like if she has an alternate source of income (something from her ex husband maybe, or maybe she can get some help from her parents?), or since she said the South Shore - maybe she is willing to live in Rhode Island or someplace less expensive, or maybe she can put one kid in daycare or if she has the time join a daycare share group, and she didn't say how old the kids are so maybe they only need daycare for another year or two. Or maybe she'll meet a guy and move in together?

There are people out there who are making a similar income and getting by. Sounds like OP is flexible because of the work from home option so I don't know, how far is she willing to bend?

OP hasn't been back to fill in any questions, but her title said 3 kids under five. This could mean 3 kids who are 4 1/2, or this could mean 3 kids who are 6 months old. Or any combo in between. If at least one is almost 5, that's a different situation than if they are all a few years from five.

Or you could move to Western Mass. Be within 60-90 minutes of the South Shore depending on where in Wmass you live and where on the SS your brother lives. 80k and 3 kids will still be a little tight. But a lot more manageable than most of Eastern MAss

With 3 kids, a nanny or au pair will be cheaper than daycare. Since you'll be working from home, a part-time babysitter might be enough too, depending on the age of the kids. Will any be old enough for school soon?
