Anybody got any advice on these two places? My wife and I are moving somewhere in or around Boston next year.

No kids, late 30's so not into all night partying but some decent bars would be nice. Looking for a bit of New England charm, but with modern conveniences (i.e. not stuck in the past). Somewhere safe, with jobs (in either of the towns would be good instead of commute to Boston). Going to rent, don't really want to pay more than $2,000 a month.

So are either of these towns decent enough places to live? They're the two we've identified outside of a suburban Boston city.

I grew up in Framingham but left MA 10 years ago. When I lived there it was "decent enough". The north side is pretty nice and suburban with a good amount forest/woodsy landscape. South side was pretty ghetto last time I was there and I've heard it's worse now.

There are potentially jobs. Bose and Genzyme were the biggest companies there when I was growing up. But it's also well located where you can commute to Boston (access to commuter rail) or commute to Waltham or other places on 128/95 corridor that have more job opportunities. Framingham has a little bit of history/charm but it also has access to every chain restaurant, store, movie theater and shopping mall that you need. No idea what rent is these days

Why just those 2 locations?

Find jobs first and then choose a housing location that makes sense based on your commuting requirements.

There wouldn't be as many jobs in Franklin, but it's a nicer place to live overall. Train to Boston as well.
Framingham would have more bars & restaurants, it's much bigger.

You may as well add Ashland to your list. It has a small town country feel with a small town center with a few diners and taverns, a decent farmer's market and some very nice parks for people and dog walking nearby. Maybe the Cochituate neighbor of Wayland/North Natick too. There aren't a lot of businesses there, but you'd be five minutes from everything the malls and Natick town center have to offer.
