kritterz78 please do not move back to California you have been by far the rudest person on this forum. To be able to insult an entire state in just a few reply's is my definition of rude. So go somewhere else and if you have returned leave on the same high horse.

rude |ro?d| adjective 1 offensively impolite or ill-mannered : she had been rude to her boss | [with infinitive ] it's rude to ask a lady her age.

Dogs getting electrocuted in the streets .... rofl .... I've lived a long time in both states. I wouldn't say there's all that much difference in the people, other than accents. There's certainly less crime in Massachusetts, at least outside the Boston area.

Weather is much nicer in California of course, I vastly prefer a drier climate .... also fewer biting/stinging insects here. However every year I do get nostalgic for the fall foliage of Massachusetts, the color here is generally just yellow and orange even if you are in a hardwood area.

It sounds like Kritterz went from a high-income area in CA to a lower-income area in MA. If she now moves to a lower-income area in CA, she will realize that the differences in people she perceives have more to do with socioeconomic status, than with there being a different breed. Poor people often tend to be more rude, surly, or "weird". Rich people are generally happier, they get what they want and have no need to develop defense mechanisms.

Some people raised in sunny California may also be prone to Seasonal Affective Disorder in gloomier Massachusetts.

I've been off this thread for awhile, but I just can't resist responding to this person who loves CA so much and hates MA. Here are some cold, hard facts that directly address their comments:

Fiction: MA people are stupid.
Fact:
MA has the highest percentage of people with college degrees of any state.
MA has the highest percentage of people with advanced degrees of any state.
Don't believe me? It is on page three of this link from the US census:
Census2000AdultEd

Fiction: MA people are fat.
Fact:
MA ranks second lowest in obesity, just above CO.
Read it here:
Obesity Report in Massachusetts 2006

Fiction: MA people are lazy.
Fact:
MA ranks third highest (after AK and CT) in GDP per capita.
Read it here:
Gross Domestic Product by State - sorted by 2000-2005 GDP Per Capita Growth

And last but not least:
Boston ranks as the most productive city in the world.
Read it here (in Figure 1.11):
http://213.253.134.43/oecd/pdfs/browseit/0406041E.PDF (broken link)

I am not sending this to change the mind of AB1222. I am guessing they don't believe a word of what they are saying. It is so contrary to the facts, no one could be so misinformed. I just don't want this person to get away with misinforming others.

Quite happy in Boston, thank you. And that's a fact.

I grew up in Massachusetts. I currently live in California. I will say for the record I am biased. Like other Bostonians I am an avid sports fan but only for Boston teams. I love the four seasons. There is something ...cleansing about it. The changing of the seasons resets my internal clock or something. I love the Cape.

IMO, I feel like the houses in MA were placed amongst nature, fitted in between the trees. In CA it feels "fake" like houses were built and then trees were planted. I don't know why that makes a difference to me but it does.

As for the people, I agree with everyone else. MA people are reserved, when we do start talking we start dropping F-bombs likes crazy but we will never forget your friendship. My "friends" in cali have been quite different. First everyone smokes weed at a minimum. Many (including my ex wife) have no problems with other drugs. I have had things stolen from me by my neighbors. They once called the cops on me because my baby was crying. Take a listen to Tom Leykis (google the name) the "virtues" he extols on that show are pretty common here in Cali.

I really tried to like California. I went to the beach often, check out all the local fairs and festivities(and there are a lot). But the people and cost of living ruined it. I can't afford to buy a house hell I can't even afford to rent an apartment with a yard. And thats important if you have kids. I can't take my kids to the park everyday, who can? I make a good amount of money. I make well above the median for a family of 4 and I struggle like I am on welfare. And don't even get me going on the smog. You drive down of the 73 and you look out into the LA basin and all you see is a big brown cloud of death. I feel like a bad parent because my kids are breathing that crap in all day. We were hardly ever sick when we lived in Ma despite the cold, In Cali we are sick all the dang time.

I don't want to bag on Cali entirely. Like I said lots to do always some kind of festival or fair going on. Weather is great, I wear dockers and and a polo year round with no thought of a jacket. Good Mexican and Asian food here. Not just good but great. I am food adventurous.

Politically the 2 states are both blue but it must be a different shade of blue or something. Well I know I just wacked the beehive on this so I apologize now.

Been here a few times. This thread seems to have a life of it's own. A very passionate topic. Having lived in Southern Ca. for over forty years, it took just one year of living in Ma. to see what I had been longing for my whole life. The contrast was like a huge wake up call. We made the mistake of moving back to Ca. after that year due to missing family, but never felt like it was home. After much perseverance, we moved back here two weeks ago. Other than finances, job growth, schools, safety, etc., for us it was about all the senses coming alive here. The beauty, the cleaner air you are not afraid to breath in deeply, living in nature, the warmest people I have ever met, the sense of community,culture....my son has been in a different school for the last few years but never has he been so embraced by his peers. He has never made friends so quickly and become so independent. He has only been in his new high school for one week, but has had friends inviting him to "hang out" the first day and has been growing ever since. Was even invited in a birthday party for next May! This is where the difference really stands out. If your kids are happy, you will be too.

I agree with DanBosCalTex an puffle wholeheartedly. But it is fair to say that others will find the West Coast more attractive for various reasons. If everyone ends up where they are most happy, the world will be a much better place.

On a separate topic, I was struck by the incredibly negative tone (and poor spelling) of both ab1222 and kritterz78 on this thread. They seemed like a real pair.

As it turns out, kritterz78 now seems to be frustrated in Lehi, Utah. Here is one of their posts:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/utah/...ml#post1686472

By amazing coincidence, ab1222 has done the same:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/utah/...ml#post1675955

It's almost as if they are the same person. Hopefully, they will find the peace and quiet they are seeking. I wish them well.

I would say that there's less of the old blue-blood types in MA these days, at least not that I run into... People here are mostly irish/italian immigrant's descendents, as these two groups came in and took over awhile ago... from the blueblood proper types. People here can be pretty eccentric... I have an uncle, aunt and cousin in So. CA and my uncle grew up in CT. his wife and daughter are CA natives though, and they're very very different from the rest of the family. It seems like a whole different lifestyle out there.
