We have been in MA for over 7 years (kids were born here). Love my town, like the people (no really, I do ), fantastic public schools, historic charm, natural beauty, history, culture etc...Just found out today we may be going back to CA (Bay Area). My husband may have an opportunity with his current company, and we will have to make a decision in the next couple of weeks! Wow.

That's a big decisions to have to make...from reading other posts that you've written, I know that you have developed a real appreciation for where you are at. I would think long and very hard about coming back to CA...I know we can't wait to leave. The Bay Area is certainly a nice spot, but CA as a whole has not gotten any better in the 7 years you've been gone. Good luck with your decision...that's a lot to have to ponder over the holidays!

Thanks dougnaie. Yes, over the last 7 years MA has grown on me, and the quality of life we can offer our kids here is certainly better (in a lot of ways) than back in CA. But, we miss our family. For example, we got a call on Thanksgiving from everyone (grandparents, uncle, cousins) who were enjoying dinner together with a trip to Disneyland the following day. We were here alone. That is the bottom line. My husband and I could list the pros and cons and debate it forever, but in the end I think we are going to go back. We are nervous as heck though! Do you think you will move to RI?

We are 99% on track for a move to CT in June when school is out. I hear you about the family issue - that's my biggest reservation. On the one hand I would love the change of pace and lifestyle, but it is really hard to think about leaving everyone behind, especially my sister who I am really close to. Also hard for all the relatives because I am the one that has all the holidays! They are all scratching their heads about what they will do next year! I know I can fly back but know too that it will not be the same...I also have a nice network of close friends, and hate the thought of all that changing. I guess it is a gamble, but one that I think will be interesting....who can say? I think if you are feeling like you are missing your family, best to come "home" - you can never get that time back. Why have regrets? I am sure it will all work out for both of us...(well, fingers crossed, anyway!)

I hope it works out for you. I do not regret my time in MA. I have leaned a lot, experienced many new things, met different people, and have gained some new perspective. I think you should go for it. No one understood why we moved from CA in the first place either, but sometimes you just need to take a great leap of faith. We will be doing the exact same thing in going back. This is the time we need to be by our family, while we all have small children (the oldest is only 7 years). When the kids are grown, who knows? Take care and best of luck to you!

voltaire-we live in the MetroWest, in Southborough and we really love our town. I have read some of your previous posts. I'm sorry you encounted such negativity. When my Englsih cousins visit me, they seem to have overwhelmingly positve experiences, but then again, we tend to stay out of the city proper. I agree, Mass folks aren't really like the Englsih any more than any other people in the US. It's been a long long time since my ancestors arrived in Boston from Sommerset(1633), too many years separate us from the old country. I hope you are happier now where you are. Cheers!

ar
southbourough
lovely town that and sturbridge , I used to devliver the beer and wine around there
we are happier and thanks for the kind words
also your ancestors come a beautiful part of England, it's still very countryesque there.
I would live back there if only the politics were 50/50 that way there is a check on either party so as not to get carried away
anyway I'm glad it's worked out for you and wish you and your family a merry christmas, , happy holidays and a great new year
