True. Lookout is more expensive. For me though, it's a super short ride compared to a farm in the Stowe area. So I save a lot of drive time and gas which is huge. Plus my kids love the "train" and the playground exhibit every orchard has.
Agreed. Honeypot is very crowded. Carlson is a great alternative.
that makes sense. if it was super local to me, I'd probably be going there too!
It's a little bit of a hike, but we head up to Parlee Farms in Tyngsboro for blueberries, apples, strawberries, etc. They use integrated pest management and have things for the kids like motorized tractors, a petting/feeding zoo, hay play area, ice cream, etc. Not overly commercial, but enough going on to keep little ones happy.
When we lived out of state the last place we went apple picking was solely just picking apples. Kind of lame and kids got bored about 10 minutes in. So a place with hay rides, activities for kids and things of that nature are what I'm interested in.
I went to Carlson Orchards a while ago and it was fun, but you want to go easy on the quantity that you pick. At the cash register you'll realize that apples would be a lot cheaper at the supermarket! Not to mention, uh, easier to pick. But I suppose that's not the point.

Yeah, PYO apples is always more expensive than even the bags sold in their own storefronts. Primarily this is due to things like the amount of apples lost from inexperienced pickers dropping apples on the ground, the amount of apples eaten by pickers, and the additional costs associated with staffing, etc.
Looking for some smaller, low-key places Clearview and Meadowbrook both in Sterling are nice. Meadowbrook is a good place to grab lunch, as well.
I live squarely between both farms and they are more in line with the PYO orchards of my youth; i.e., lacking hordes of urbanites seeking a day or "rural" living. Additionally, Rota Springs ice cream is down the road and provides a similarly bucolic NE experience.
But seeing as nearly everyone in the neighborhood has an apple orchard, my wife and I need a bit more motivation to seek out a PYO location. When we do PYO trees other than our friends and neighbors, we take a drive out to Hyland Orchards in Sturbridge, which has the Rapscallion tap room on the farm. Have a few rounds at the tap room then sober up wondering the orchard - win win.
