Cape Cod: Wellfleet question(Moby Dick's)
Hi all,
Finished college last May and have been trying to figure out just what it is I'm going to do with my life. I've decided on relocating to Denver, Tampa, or Charlotte...but that's a whole other thread in itself.
I'm planning on moving without a job(smart, i know) so I'll need a relatively substantial amount of savings before I go. I did seasonal work waiting tables in Wyoming last summer and it was great money. Since I'm in a similar situation again, I was hoping to be closer to the beach this summer, since I was born and currently live on the Jersey Shore.
I'll get to the point. Moby Dick's in Wellfleet offers seasonal positions for servers(they also offer housing nearby). I was thinking off applying for that, but wanted to know exactly what I'd be getting myself into. Is anyone familiar with the restaurant? Does it seem like a fun place to work, where the tips would be pretty good as well?
Also, though I've never been to the Cape, I'm pretty aware it's not really a party area. Are there at least a couple of bars someone my age(23) would be able to hang out at and meet some people my own age?
I surfed around these forums for a few minutes and noticed some pretty helpful posters so I was hoping those people wouldn't mind helping me out if they had a minute.
Thanks!

The Beachcomber is a fun place - not sure if it's still open but hopefully so. I love Wellfleet. We used to spend time there. Besides beautiful ocean side beaches there are three lovely ponds for swimming & one has paddle boating.

I live in Wellfleet (about ½ a mile from Moby’s and it’s one of my wife’s and mine favorite restaurants). Specific info:
Moby’s hires lots of foreign workers (lots of Eastern Europeans, plenty of English, Irish, Scotch, plus Americans). The couple that run the place seem like really nice people and my sense is they treat their staff well. Not a clue about tips and such, but Moby’s is packed during the summer. Sometimes the line is so long I have to wonder why anyone would want to wait to get in!
I believe the owners have some sort of staff housing available. Don’t know much more then that.
Will you be entertained while in Wellfleet? You gotta be kidding? A 23 year old in Wellfleet during he summer is like dying and going to heaven. Lots of places to go, lots of other young folks around you. It’s a nice safe environment which you should have a great time in.
A bike will get you around Wellfleet for the summer, although a car would be better. No charge for walk-ins and bikes at the ponds and ocean parking lots (except for the Marconi beach area, which is federal property).
Hope this helps,
Rich

I can give you some insight in regards to the Cape for someone your age. I'm 29 and lived on the Cape for 8 years (21-29 years old). I moved out of MA back in September but here is my take on the Cape. In the summer it's a great time with lots of tourists. Wellfleet is a great town but I've never heard of Moby Dick's. The Beachcomber would be a great place to work because it is packed in the summer, is right on the beach, and I'm sure you'll meet a lot of new people. Wellfleet is considered the Outer Cape and it's very seasonal so in the offseason it's completely dead. I see a lot of college kids and people who like to travel around the country in the hospitality industry come to the Cape in the summer and never want to leave. I loved living there my first few years because it's beautiful but on a year round basis it can get dull. If you're a drinker you're in luck because I think most young people on the Cape drink and that's it. Hyannis is definitely the busiest place on the Cape year round. In the summer it's full of tourists but there are great bars on Main Street and around the Hyannis Marina. My favorite places are the Thirsty Tuna, Trader Ed's, and Tugboats. If you're looking to stay on the Outer Cape to party their aren't many options though. I would say the Beachcomber is your best bet. P-town is a fun place but it caters to the alternative lifestyle so be ready to see some freaky people and things. The Chatham Squire in Chatham is a busy place as well. I think you'll love working and lving there in the summer but if you like a lot of action you'll get bored there in the offseason. My advice is give it a whirl for a summer. I would say Hyannis is your best bet for nightlife though. There are a couple good bars in Dennis as well but it really depends on what you like.
