I enjoyed the fine thick Roast Beef Special at Elsie's in Cambridge back in 1956-1960. As I recall, with the aid of internet research, it was about 1/3 inch of thin-sliced medium rare roast beef on a Kaiser roll, backed by onions (Bermudas, I read) and slathered in Russian dressing. Elsie alas seems to have gone to her reward (infinite Roast Beef Specials! penniless Harvardians with boundless appetites!).

If any can correct my recipe-of-remembrance, please do, since I propose to see if I cannot raise the ghost of the Roast Beef Special--and then devour its physical manifestation! (Of course 50 cents will no longer cover costs of resurrection....).

First thing that came to mind. Elsie's was in Harvard Square. Awesome. Loved the five cheese sandwich.
