In this market, and with the depressing economic outlook for our future, I would refrain from purchasing any house that has a "minus" attached to it. There will (or may) come a time when you want to sell this house, and there are many people who won't even consider purchasing a home so near the tracks. Follow your instincts: if you have doubts and questions, so will future potential buyers. Although I know it's hard if you really love the house
Good luck in your decision.

Thank you for your thoughtful replies, everyone. We just looked at the house again, and while we like almost everything about it and could really see ourselves living there, we heard/saw two trains go by while we were at the showing and are just uncertain about how it would impact us. While I imagine we would get used to hearing them go by and even get used to the horn, what if we don't? It's probably too big of an uncertainty when going into such a large/long term purchase.

Hopefully there will be another house out there that we like just as much! (Though it's hard to see things that way right now).

I think I would rather hear highway noise rather than a train? Alot of people think highway noise is soothing, depending on how close.

I live within .1 miles to the Commuter Rail stop in Southborough...to be honest, you become immune to the sound of the train. I have never once be woken up at night due to the train sounding its horn and rarely to I even hear it during the evening rush.

The town is a very quiet and peaceful community and the reality is that the train is an added bonus with easy access to Boston.
