Default Plymouth- different neighborhoods

Hi,
My family is moving to the South Shore and are considering Plymouth. We saw some homes in Plymouth, but it is so big and we cant seem to get a handle on the different areas. We saw some great homes close to town, but have seen some that look freat in Manomet. Can anyone give us some insight into the different areas? We are professionals with 3 small children. We will likely live here for 5 yrs tops, so elementary schools would be important, but we arent focusing on middle and high schools yet. Looking for a nice down to Earth place to raise our kids, that doesnt feel to rural. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I have a close friend that lives and Manomet and really likes it there. Of course he is single so I don't have an inside track on the schools there. From what I seen it a nice part of Plymouth. I'd say your pretty close to most thing that you need though I would say it a little on the rural side.
I'd say go and check it out first then decide for yourself if you like it.

Plymouth is definitely a big town (land wise the biggest in MA). As far as the nicest places in Plymouth, I would say North Plymouth is probably the best. Manomet isn't the greatest place in the world. I would much rather live in Cedarville than Manomet but that's just me. If you want to be close to the downtown area I would say North Plymouth for sure. Bear in mind, Plymouth as a whole is not a nice town. Plus, the taxes are high.

Manomet! That's where I'm from!! I've lived in so many places since leaving for college, I think I have a good vantage point from which to comment.
It HAS changed quite a bit, some new developments with some very pretty houses. And lots of the older areas are pretty, like Pricilla Beach, the beach area across from St. Bonaventure's, etc.

LOL, saying you were from Manomet used to be like admitting that you had a "crazy uncle." It was a pretty place with some pretty odd people. There seems to be a seedy underbelly, and the schools STUNK, and of course we had the prestige of the nuke plant down the street. My parents sheltered the heck out of me, but it was annoying that I could play with some kids in the area but not others. I guess this could apply to any town, but there really used to be a lot of uneducated parents with unsupervised children. Then again, lots of kids that I grew up with have done very well in life too. Others have been in national porn, gotten pregnant at 16, been busted for drugs, gone to rehab, and many still live in the area.

The access to water in Manomet is fantastic! There's not much public access to the beach, so I would definitely try to be within walking distance. My friends and I could choose from several beaches, private pools, and three ponds when deciding where to go swimming in the summers.

Shopping and dining is limited at best. But you are nicely located in relation to Cape Cod and Boston. Summers can be unbelievably crowded. There are a lot of positives, just be sure to check out the schools.

hello, i have lived in the south shore all my life except for a short stint in nc, here is a list of better more family orientated areas in plymouth... west plymouth..quite nice nieghborhoods, great for kids, best schools... south plymouth...even more quiet lots of land... now i will tell you that north plymouth.. not so nice... lots and lots of drugs..lots of section 8 housing, gangs, theft, fights.. police are always being called there. six years ago there was a prostitution ring busted, lots of crack and coke. I lived there for a very horrible 9 months and was horrified. I saw so many drug busts, domestic fights in the street were police had to be called and i was stuck in my car in a gang fight in the middle of the road were people were beating eachother about 10 people involved, a man was pulled out of his car and beaten, i watched in horrification, the police arrived, would not let me move or get out of the car for my safety, it took 7 police cars and they finally got it under control, everyone was arrested and to my dismay in the middle of that whole thing, i saw a police officer take a baby out of the backseat of one of the cars involved....at that point i really didnt care how much money i was saving living there, we moved within a month. North plymouth has cleaned up a little since then however there is still alot of drugs and gang issues there. Manomet is a nice beachside community, smaller houses not alot of land... i hope this helps.... good luck with your move...

Default Moving to Plymouth

Hi,
The way I understand it, the most highly rated elementary school in Plymouth is the Federal Furnace School.

I live in West Plymouth, it's nice area, we have young children and feel safe here. West Elementary and Federal Furnace are both considered good schools within the town. I also love Manomet, it is just a little more rural, and a little further from the highway which was a biggie for us when we first moved here. If I had to move here again I would pick between West Plymouth and Manomet. I myself do not care for North Plymouth, some people really like it, we looked at several neighborhoods there it was just not what we were looking for. South Plymouth is also nice we just felt it was too far south for our commutes. Good Luck with your move!!

Plymouth Center - includes downtown, the waterfront, etc. Typical of any downtown area aka the houses are older, closer together (not a lot of land typically) but you are close to everything including beaches and schools.

Manomet - south of downtown (exit 3-4) is close to Whitehorse beach and is more of a beach community. This is where my hubby grew up and loved it. I like it as well though I find it's hard to find a house with a good lot size as there are a lot of more beach community houses... though there are some that are good like his parents. There is a local grocery story, CVS, a few restaurants and gas stations. The elementary schools here are good from what I'm told (Indian Brook, Manomet Elementary)

Cedarville - really south plymouth (exit 2) is closes to the Cape. Not sure which school these folks go to. It's a nice area, again a beach community type setting (and also the Ponds of Plymouth which is a huge development). There is a grocery story, few restaurants, close to highway and cape...

Chiltonville - just south of Plymouth center (near Jordan Hospital which is exit 5). This is my favorite area as it's very country looking in portions, gorgeous houses (some older) close to town, close to beaches, close to highway... but the houses tend to be more expensive and I don't often find any for sale there.

Ellisville - again very south of Plymouth center (between Manomet and Cedarville). Beach area, little park, nice houses, large yards... very pretty area. Probably go to Indian Brook Elementary?

North Plymouth - we used to consider this more of the "ghetto" of Plymouth when I was young. But it's cleaned up a lot and we actually rented two apartments there before buying a house on the cape. It's great in that it's close to downtown as well as Kingston (mall, all new minimalls off exit 7) and you can walk to some restaurants, shops, etc.

West Plymouth - close to Carver (where I grew up). Reminds me of the 70's type developments (lots of raised ranches, cookie cutter type neighborhoods but also has many new ones). My hubby dislikes this area... I don't think it's bad. Probably a lot of young families in this section.

Hope this helped you.
