IMO, Worcester has equal top tier dining and far greater low to mid tier options. Boston, Portland, and to a lesser degree Providence, are the only cities with notably better restaurant scenes (IMO). Cities like Portsmouth and Burlington VT may have notable scenes on a per capita basis, but they lack depth due to the seasonal flow and lack of density/diversity.

The best place I ate in "Portsmouth" was actually in Kittery (Birch).

The scene on Shrewsbury street is good. The problem however is that it is not really downtown. There are still not a lot of close by options for those going to events at the Hanover or Mechanics Hall. Could even throw in the DCU Center as most of its patrons never venture to the other side of Route 290.

This is very true, but I think starting to change. With the influx of Students, the Grid District Apartments and City Square there are more people than ever living downtown.

IMO, two of the better options in Worcester are down the street from Hanover - Dead Horse and Armsby. There's also Bull Mansion, which is a charming venue, but the food is somewhat underwhelming compared to it's peers.

Additionally, you have the Boyton and Sole which, by urban walking standards, is still within range.

I haven't had any complaints with the Worcester restaurant scene. I use to frequent Armsby when one of my friends still lived in the area. I can't really comment on the food, but the drinks are pretty good. The Sole Proprietor and The Boynton are my other two favorites. A guy who I graduated high school with is opening up a restaurant on Green Street called Buck’s Whiskey & Burger Bar.

Hopefully it's pretty good.

Very Nice. Perfect addition to that end of Green Street. Urban Smokestack at the other end is one of my favorites.

Sonoma was excellent when it was in Princeton. I haven't been since they moved to the Beechwood Hotel but i'm assuming it is just as excellent.

Smokestack for BBQ, El Basha for Mediterranean Food. Birch Tree, for coffee, sandwiches on fresh baked bread and doing some work. Crown Bakery for Swedish goodies. I'm sure I'll think of more.
