Hi there. Does anyone know the process of excise tax when purchasing a new vehicle. I took delivery of a new vehicle last week. my excise bill came from my old vehicle due Apr. 12. Do I ignore this and wait for amendment or do i have the luxury of getting double taxation this year?

For the exsise tax on the new car just wait until they bill you. I'd pay for the exsise tax on the old car though.

If you don't pay for the exsise tax on the old car you'll encure penalties. Since you owned the car on January 1st you still owe that bill. The new car won't get an exsise tax bill until next year.

I would pay the old bill in full, then contact the local Board of Assessors for an application for abatement to when you sold the vehicle. You will need to provide proof of when the old vehicle was sold, traded, etc. Specifically a bill of sale and either a plate return receipt or new registration if plates were transferred. You don't need to pay the old bill to get an abatement but that way you will avoid any late fees, etc. Your city/town website may have more information on this. You need to request an abatement, they're not going to amend anything unless you ask.

You probably will get a bill on the new vehicle within this year.

As noted above, pay the excise tax on the old vehicle. But save yourself a trip to town/city hall. Wait for the excise tax bill for the new car and take it and the old bill to the tax collector's office and they will abate it at that time.

You should get the tax bill in less than a month.

Same thing happened for me. I took the excise tax bill to the townhall with supporting info showing the old car was sold. They gave me a prorated refund on the excise tax for the months I no longer own the car. The actual check comes later.

I just went through this myself. I did not pay the old cars excise tax bill. On the reverse it shows the docs necessary to abate by mail. I mailed them in and received a corrected excise tax bill showing $0 owed about a week later

Still waiting on bill for new car

I did see that form. So you didn't send a check? Just a copy of the registration and that for filled out?

Since we traded in the old car for a new car, I mailed in a copy of the new car's registration, and a copy of the sales document from the dealer showing the VIN number of the old car listed as a trade in on the sheet. I filed the back of the form and just mailed that in. I did not send any money.

Roughly a week or so later I got an amended "bill" showing $0 was owed for that car.

Unsure if the date matters here, but we purchased the new car in the 2nd week of January. So the old car was traded in then.
