All,

We are moving to Massachusetts from Connecticut for work. I will be looking for a 3 bed room house with in 550K in a suburban area with good school system. I am okay with the train ride to downtown ( I am ware of the car traffic to down town) up to 45 mins. I have Sharon, south borough and west borough in mind. But south borough and west borough train rides are more than 45 mins. I am looking at school ratings more than 7 out of 10. Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks for your help in Advance.

Regards,

Saravanan

What part of downtown. North Station, South Station, or the Back Bay? Not having to do a transfer is great, so i'd choose based off of where your work is.

One of my favorites would be Hingham, since you could take a ferry instead of the commuter rail. That budget is an issue there though.

I think the highlighted criteria alone will be challenging in this area, not even considering the commute time. Where in CT are you moving from? Unless it's Fairfield county, you will experience sticker shock in this region.

Assuming you can ride into North Station: Reading.

You can find homes in the $550K range, but they might be on the smaller side and need some updating.

How suburban?

Westborough meets some of your criteria, but is a whole lot further than 30 minutes away from anywhere in town.

Beverly and Swampscott are other good options.

But as a whole South Station and Back Bay together are more convenient to most offices.

You're basically looking for the same thing all new buyers want. $550K will get you something decent about 45-60 minutes out of the city, but not in the 30-45 minute range.

OP might be able to find something if they're willing to go for a fixer upper on a main road.

Maybe not door to door but a 40 min train ride is doable.

OP could also settle on decent schools and not top notch schools.

Sharon is closest of the three and pretty good. You should be able to find something for ~550K.
