I need to replace my water heater. I wanted to ask if anyone has replaced theirs and how much that cost you, and where are you located? I have a 75gal gas fired, forced induction unit. I looked online for prices of the unit itself, it’s somewhere in the vicinity of $1300-1500. How much would a plumber charge for this type of work? Is this a 3-4 hours of work?

We just had to have our's replaced. The plumber got it and installed it. We got a 40 gallon tank and it was $1400 for it, installed by the plumber. It was in our basement. We're in Newton. It only took about 2 hours.

I ended up going to Lowe’s and getting their random plumber subcontractor. The water heater is on special order and won’t be installed for a few weeks. This would have been a deal breaker if my water heater was already leaking.

My total was $2,100 which breaks down as: $600 for labor and the rest is parts. Now, a quote I got from a different company, small son and dad plumbing outfit (name redacted) in good standing and reasonably priced, according to my town facebook’s page, was a whopping $4k.

Is $700-$800 per hour what an average plumber charges today?

no it's not. Probably take 2.5-3 hours to drain and remove your old WH and install a new one. You're also paying for the disposal of your old unit. Boston metro prices will be higher than outlying areas. Lowe's price is about what I'd expect to pay if you are in a HCOL area.

$1500 +/- $200 installed is par for the course for your average 40-50 gal heater replacement. More if your unit is larger or a unique install. $4K for an install is just a bit crazy. I'd think $600 of labor on top of material costs (with a bit of a markup) is typical. There are rebates available.

I actually need to change out my waterheater as well as I just noticed it starting to leak.

A standard 40 gallon water heater is about $500-800, power vent about $1000-1200 depending on the warranty even at the supply houses. You will pay about $120/man/hour portal to portal - leave shop, drive to supply house, drive to your home, two hours of labor, drive back to shop. That labor also "pays" for warranty service from the plumber should anything happen during the warranty period.

Some plumbers will charge a disposal fee for the old water heater but the smart ones take them to the scrap yard on a regular basis and get a few bucks for each one.

We had a 40-gallon gas-fired water heater replaced for $1075, but that was in Western Mass.

$1200 for a 40 gal.

I wanted to go energy star but that required electricity which would have never paid for itself.

I had a 40 gallon gas water replaced with a State on Memorial Day Saturday for $850. That’s not inside the 495 belt.
