“There has been some reports about a FaceTime phone call that was made between a man during a car stop. After that car stop, police recovered a significant amount of drugs. And during that car stop, the suspect claimed that one of the items found in the vehicle belonged to Hanley Ramirez and then FaceTimed [Ramirez] in front of police. And that car stop coordinated with the timing of his release from the Red Sox.”
McPhee reported that the suspect who was pulled over — a person who was not Ramirez — was found with “435 grams of fentanyl as well as a large amount of crack cocaine.”
“There is a sweeping federal case involving a substantial ring that’s being operated out of Lawrence, Massachusetts,” McPhee said. “And I think the suspect had ties to that ring.”

I find it hard to believe that the Red Sox didn't know about this.

Has McPhee gotten help for her own issues yet?

There hasn’t been any really substantive new on this since the story broke. Words like “Being Eyed” are not particularly informative. The globe also posted yesterday or so that their sources deny that he is being investigated.

Typical WEEI trying to remain relevant

Hanley can still hit. Any team could grab him at the league minimum, but nobody has. There has to be something to this story.

massnative, what's up with McPhee?

McPhee was apparently wrong about this. It is being reported that the car stop was on June 6. Hanley was designated for assignment on May 25 and released on June 1.

Hanley hit the cover off the ball in April and then slumped in May, followed by his departure. Ok so one month was really great, the other was bad (and coincided with a little heat). And not one team picked him up? Nobody? Yeah, people definitely knew. Red Sox for sure, but also people around the league.

Who says the Red Sox aren't likable?

There were legit baseball reasons to DFA/release him.

They didn't want him to get 497 at bats, as that would have guaranteed him $22 million for 2019. He was slumping, Mitch Moreland was on fire, and they thought Pedroia was coming back. It just made sense at the time for the Red Sox. (It looked like a bad move afterwards, though, when it became clear Pedroia's knee is not ok.)

And, again, the timeline of the car stop and DFA doesn't match up.

But, 29 teams could take Hanley at minimum wage (545k) and no takers. This info was absolutely out there.

Hanley has a ridiculous amount of money, and I believe he's been very frugal with it over the years.

Was he funding the drug ring?

He's not even in the US; he's in the Dominican Republic right now.

Lots of details here:

Hanley Ramirez not under federal investigation; friend dropped his name hoping to avoid arrest

Quote:
The man consented to a search of his Jeep, but when the trooper asked to open a brown cardboard box found in the rear cargo area, the man declined, saying it belonged to Ramirez.

The man claimed that the box contained books, and that Ramirez’s mother “had shipped the box to him in New York to hand-deliver to his friend [Ramirez] in Boston,” according to the affidavit.

In an attempt to back up his story, the man called Ramirez via FaceTime on his cell phone, then handed it to the trooper. The trooper asked Ramirez if he was aware that his friend was en route to visit him and was delivering a box from his mother. Ramirez said he “was not aware,” according to the affidavit. The trooper asked if he could open the box and Ramirez agreed.

The box contained a gift bag, with two kilograms of fentanyl inside, the affidavit says.
