What I'm saying is, those dark blue towns Semiurbanite suggested are not exactly the most tolerant communities if you know what I mean (at least most of them).

Sorry Semiurbanite, but Progressive ≠ Democrat. Lots of wealthy/out of touch Democrats need to learn this.

There is some crossover of course, but wow.

It’s probably a good correlation though, right? Are there any pink or light blue towns you would identify as more progressive than dark blue towns?

When we asked about the difference, our realtor suggested that this isn’t a big deal here and folks are more concerned with education and political stances of neighbors! So why can’t all be considered? Aren’t property values an issue?!
That is worse. As long as they are a good neighbor, the rest is snobbery. Why care about who they vote for or what degree they have. This says nothing about what kind of neighbor or person they may be.

In New England many people tend to be more laid back about appearances and not as uptight about keeping up with Jones. Property values don't suffer because of imperfect lawn in a neighborhood. You are making a big deal out of things that aren't such a big deal here. So it's different from where you used to live in another part of the country, ok. It's up to you to decide if you can deal with it or if it isn't a good fit.

I thought the OP meant "progressive" as in having better manners, not a reference to voting patterns.

There has been progress in the purity of Fentanyl from Lawrence, the dark blue center of the NE opiate
universe. But it is "diverse" in the way that progressives like to define diverse, therefore progressive.

Progressive doesn't mean "having better manners". means:

Quote:
making progress toward better conditions; employing or advocating more enlightened or liberal ideas, new or experimental methods, etc.:
It's pretty twisted to consider progressive synonymous with polite, because one then probably considers conservative synonymous with rude. There are plenty of perfectly polite progressives and conservatives, just as there are plenty extremely rude progressives and conservatives.

Not really. A Rockefeller Republican is a progressive. Bill Weld had gay/lesbian cabinet members, right? Jesse Helms blocked him from being an ambassador to Mexico. The massively wealthy Boston suburbs voted for the more progressive Presidential candidate last time. It's the pickup truck & hard hat working class towns that didn't vote that way.

With the flat state income tax, the Massachusetts legislature is very moderate fiscally. Everyone feels the same pain if you jack up income taxes. The tax burden in Massachusetts is pretty middle of the road nationally unless you're in a metro Boston town where you're paying property taxes on what is now a million dollar house.

Progressive means you believe in social reform. It doesn't necessarily mean you believe in a massive welfare state where people have no incentive to work and fall into generational poverty. Recall that the biggest welfare reform since LBJ came under Bill Clinton. He put the five year 'temporary' cash welfare lifetime limit into TANF. ObamaCare looks very similar to RomneyCare.

No, I'm saying I don't think that's what the OP meant. She didn't ask about living in blue areas, she wanted to know towns where the people aren't rude.

Notice the towns she was complaining about are all "blue", anyway.

Not sure how anyone would want to a) seek out progressives or b) have trouble finding them. It's the most stock, milquetoast political/cultural outlook in the country today.
