The seacoast region of NH is also very nice. It's not convenient to commute to Boston/Cambridge, but if no one is going to be doing that anyway, I'd look up there as well. I think the towns around the Great Bay offer the best value. Exeter is reasonably convenient to Seabrook, and it's a very nice town. Real estate prices are probably roughly on par with Amesbury. The RE taxes are pretty bad there, but since you'd be working and living in NH, you'd escape the MA state income tax - that savings would offset the added RE tax. Amesbury, MA and Exeter, NH would be good places to look, in my opinion, for a place in the low $400K range, easily commutable to Seabrook, NH.

There are doggie daycare and dog-walker services in the area, as well as plenty o'dogs.
