Pembroke is much better than Middleboro for both schools and commuting to Hingham. And yes, an hour commute is very normal.

I had in-laws in Mansfield. They sent their child to school there and were pleased with both the town and its education.

I think that Hanover might offer what you are looking for. The town has good schools, suburban feel and lots of nearby shopping. Hanover would be a pretty easy commute to Hingham as well. They are redeveloping the Hanover Mall and you are close to a really nice YMCA.

Hanover and Norwell would be good choices.

I don't really know anything about this area, but there are several 3-4 bed houses available in Hingham for 600k or less.

Is there anyone here who does a Route 3 commute? I pretty much never drive on that part of Route 3. How ugly is it during rush hour between, say, Plymouth and Hingham?

No way would I want that commute. A few exits sure, and where you are coming from close enough to have back road alternatives. Stick with Hanover, Norwell, Marshfield, Pembroke area. No further than that.
