No way.
In our family we make more income but my base salary is only 170k. I pay the entire mortgage, all utilities, everything out of my salary and I still save 30k+ out of my base. My mortgage balance is Over 650k. All my rsu and cash bonus goes right into the market. My wife is able to save a huge chunk of her money too.

240k feels very much sufficient to me. Especially if that person will have an additional 100k+ liquid after the 20% Down Payment.

If my wife lost her job and I lost my bonus and stock income. We’d easily manage on the 170k.

Oddly enough I feel more comfortable now with the 650k mortgage debt than I did before we bought. It’s a good inflation hedge. Housing is also relatively uncorrelated with stocks. (It’s true - look it up)

Thanks. This is similiar to conflicting advice I've received from family and friends. I'd love to be closer to 700s 750 if possible. We've seen 2 really nice listings go 760 in the past few months but it's on the rarer side to find in a good neighborhood in Natick at the quality we were looking. Something like this was just posted but not going to excite wife and think I'd prefer a little nicer too. I'm at 115 base and 20 percent bonus which is essentially guaranteed unless maybe a serious recession. Wife is the rest all salary and plans to keep working. She's an admin in a school so has good hours.
I'd probably just do 20 percent down for the flexibility but we'll see. I also love long term stock investing though. Not loving the change in tax plan. Thanks

panchilly,
Assuming you are in tech, could you list the best tech companies to work for in Boston that pay 170k base for good engineers. Here's my list so far, from other people, these only pay up to 130k for 10-15 years experience for backend java/c++ experience
- Wayfair
- hubspot
- trip advisor
- google (can get 170k+)
- facebook (can get 170k+)
- Akami

curious to get your opinions

I work for a similar company (but not google or Facebook). Salaries have shot up in the last few years. I have 10-15exp. My package is roughly 250k tc with 170k base 15% bonus rest stock.

130 is bull**** for a senior now. New grad making 100-110 now base and I personally know engineers making over 190 base.

Btw throw in amazon, vistaprint, VMware, salesforce, cargurus, Microsoft, even Bose is paying 200k+ packages in Framingham. There are probably 50 other companies that will do same

Wayfair is known for paying a little low although they’ve gotten better. But the rest you listed can go up to probably 190-200 base for principal level top tier. 160-170 base easily doable now for senior.

Dam I wish I went into programming. So much money and demand. Not taking anything away from the skills and talent but It doesn't seem like you need to have come from a top University or have additional degrees or have certifications to break into it like some other fields that are paying less .

It wasn’t always this good.

I think programming is the easiest way to make money these days.
