Now that we have legal recreational marijuana, allowing businesses to serve drinks at discounted prices doesn’t seem too radical. Do you think it will ever happen?

Well that’s very pessimistic.

I’m moving back to Boston in around 2 weeks. While there’s a lot I miss about living there, the cost of drinks at restaurants is not one of them.

We used to have Happy Hours in the 80's if I remember correctly and it was outlawed as a way to reduce drunk driving.

Yeah, I think it was to reduce binge drinking (pound a couple more in before happy hour was over). It makes sense, I definitely see that mentality when I've lived in places with big happy hours.

Has the ban reduced DUIs compared to states that allow happy hour?

Kind of a pointless question. Nobody is going to fight MADD and the anti-DUI mantra. When self-driving cars happen, sure. Until then, there's zero chance any state with an anti-Happy Hour law is going to repeal it.

A good friend of mine jokes that he's a charter member of DAMM. Drunks against mad mothers.

I'm pretty sure the restaurant associations are against its repeal too. Or they were at one point.
