Any Friday between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and even a few before and after those times. Outside of those months you are just fighting regular Boston commuter traffic which is no picnic even in the winter.

How about this (Plan G):

Stay somewhere decent overnight Friday night, but on the west side of where the roads are apparently bad. Maybe Taunton, Wareham, or Fairhaven? Then go to New Bedford early on Saturday, take the ferry from there to Martha's Vineyard. Then return to New Bedford mid or late afternoon, and drive back to the Boston area Saturday night (via 140/24)? It's all about avoiding travel on the Cape, right?

Totally untrue. Alternatives have already been posted here.

If you can't leave earlier on Friday, then maybe that's not a bad idea (if missing the Cape is not the end of the world.

Of those you might as well do Fairhaven, for a regular hotel. There might also be B&B type places available in Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, Marion, etc. (and get a good taste of that very charming area for a night).

Thanks. Yes, we don't need to see the Cape. It's all about going to the island for a morning and afternoon (and a stay somewhere the night before).

The New Bedford Harbor Hotel is a brand new boutique hotel maybe 5 blocks up Union Street from the waterfront. Valet parking. You can’t get more convenient than that. The hotel has a restaurant. You’re walkable to a bunch of dining options. There’s also a new-ish Fairfield Inn on the waterfront. I imagine that’s more generic. The 4 blocks at the New Bedford waterfront are gentrified. Cobblestone streets around the Whaling Museum. Restaurants. Usually some live music options. On a June weekend, as safe as any other urban place.

The other lodging options in the area are pretty pathetic. A Residence Inn in Dartmouth’s mall hell and a Hampton Inn in Fairhaven are the best of the lot.

Other than eating, we don't necessarily need much to look at, although that would be a plus. It's more just a place to stay somewhat near the easier port to get in and out of (New Bedford, based on most of the discussions).

We won't be staying in New Bedford. Looking at the demographics for New Bedford, I see where it is much different from the rest of the area, and probably ties in to previous comments about not staying there.

The stay could be much farther away. I saw possibilities in Raynham and Middleboro. Are those decent areas?

We'll have a car, and prefer driving to the coast. But for the island, we're okay getting around by taxi, Skype, or bus, if they have any of those (something we haven't researched yet). Maybe even scooters.
I live in/around Boston, been going to Vineyard for 10+ years now; family is from there. I never parked/gone to New Bedford, always Woods Hole.

Your call.

Also if I was going to only do a Day/1 night trip to MV I would drive to Woods Hole park in a lot bring down two bikes, take a bus down to Ferry, (There is a spot on the boat for your bikes) make sure you take a boat going to Oak Bluffs. Most people who go to Vineyard for only a Day/night go to OB because its way more user friendly. Right off boat to restaurants, hotels etc. Vineyard Haven is more........residential, sure they have a few shops, hotels. From OB you can ride a nice bike path down on the ocean, down past State Beach (Jump off the small bridge if you want) and stay on that road and it will take you all the way down to Downtown Edgartown. Or just staying in OB, your call.

And don't rent a motor scooter, at least 1-2 people die a year on the Island on those.
