I looked at a unit today. very affordable price needs some updating but not bad but the pool area / library a bit dated.

the biggest issue I have is the parking for the building is having to purchase parking at the adjacent public parking garage for the year $500.

I was told in the October time frame (busy season for Halloween) it can get difficult to find a spot.

the cost isn't the problem it's the wondering if I'm going to be able to find a parking space.

I'm single, retired, like the downtown walkable aspect and proximity/ access to Boston.

I want to relocate to the Boston area because adult daughter moved there recently for work and I'd like to be closer to her.

any general comments about The Essex / Salem / parking situations in the Boston area towns appreciated.

Downtown Salem is very walkable - you won't need to take your car out much if you live right there, I don't know about groceries but plenty of convenience shopping, cafe's, restaurants, etc right there. Uber and Lyft are also very available and not prohibitively expensive there too. Oh, and you're right by the Commuter Rail - you can take it into boston in 30 minutes.

500/yr frankly is a good deal on parking in eastern MA, hard to find it for less than 100/month even in the suburbs.

So really, if you don't mind being out and about and walking, it's a great location. If you have mobility issues you may wish to reconsider, mainly because there's a lot of brick/cobblestone sidewalks there

Parking in the garage shouldn’t be an issue during the week. Most of the tourist activity in Salem is on the weekends and the days leading to Halloween.
Anecdotally, the people I know who live in Salem tend to hunker down in October. Not only is parking a challenge on weekends, but traffic in and out of the city is terrible.
As for The Essex, it is in a great location. The downside of this is that It will be crowded and pretty loud during Halloween, but downtown Salem is small and it’s hard to get away from the activity in October.
