If you are going to go rte 2 or rte 117 there are other options: Stow, Bolton, Harvard...It depends on what your looking for?? maybe drive through the towns? Do research on the web...greatschools.com, USNews(Americas best high schools)there are many other research tools for schools and towns.
I hear Acton/Boxborough towns have great schools, Harvard small town schools with great scores and the reputation is really good too. Stow/Bolton small towns have great schools, I hear great things about both town schools and really Great things about the high school. Concord/Carlisle, Lincoln/Sudbury, Westford, Northborough/Southborough, Weston, Wayland, Newton, Wellsley, Dover/Sherborn, Natick, Hopkinton, Holliston Medfield...all good towns-Most are a little exspensive.

The base is closed and is now conservation land. There are lots of great houses in your price range in Sudbury. I am a mother of 3 and have had wonderful experiences here. The people are not snobby just educated and care very much about quality education for their children. It is "the" town people who know, want to live in. In the most recent Boston Magazine school issue, Sudbury ranked 2nd in the state, after Brookline, and third was Weston. It is a great place to raise a family.

For up to $700K, you could buy anything you want in Littleton, and it's a lovely town, good community feel, good schools, lots of conservation land.
As for shopping, I never know what people mean by that. I can get whatever I need from the local supermarket, hardware store and CVS in Littleton. What is this "shopping" that people talk about?
The nearest mall is about 20 mi. away, west to Leominster, north to Nashua (tax-free). A lot of Littleton feels quite rural although it is minutes from I-495 and Rt.2. You might not find it upscale enough, but it is very unpretentious and blue-collar prosperous.

What about Norfolk? Has the Norfolk Community League, www.norfolkcommunityleague.org, has a great recreation program, good schools, nice houses, train to Boston, nice neighborhoods with lots of stay at home mom's. Nice parks and playgrounds too.

Sudbury, Acton, Wayland
All great towns. I have friends live in each of them and love it there. All three towns recently experienced big home price declines, so it may work well for you in terms of buying: Mass. single family house prices 2007-2008 - Boston.com.
Wayland has the advantage of being closer to Boston. Boston offers many high level children's activities too. Being close make frequent visits possible. Closer to Logan is also a plus if you travel a lot.
